Yanmar Magnesium Anodes?

Post by Alan_Douville »

My Yanmar (6LP STP2) has been fishing Lake Michigan for about 8 years now, no signs of corrosion and I have Zinc Anodes in it. I have always wanted to replace them with Magnesium Anodes but for the life of me, I can't find anyone who makes a Kit for the engine in Magnesium? Any feedback on this one? Do I just leave the zinc ones in and hope for the best, or does anyone know who makes a kit for Yanmar's?

Thanks

Alan

BoatZincs.com sells magnesium engine anodes
http://www.boatzincs.com/engine-magnesium.html

If you were back/forth between salt & fresh I'd stay zinc but for fresh only I'd switch them out.

For sure you only need one of the E-2's for the intercooler. Four E-1's will take care of your heat exchanger and lube oil cooler, they take 2 each. But what about your tranny (gear oil) cooler and fuel cooler. They "may" have the E-1 zincs as well, some do, some don't..

The service manual should not be your guide here, like I said, some do and some don't have zincs on the gear and fuel cooler, the only way to know for sure is to check. BTW, that page you posted does list a fuel cooler zinc...and it refers you elsewhere for the gear.

Good move buying extra you'll either need them now or later. At least you don't have to worry about dribbling salt water on things when you pull out the zincs. I used to run her on fresh water at the dock for awhile before pulling the zincs. You're already one step ahead! I always use marine grease or pipe thread sealant...don't get caught up in the old loss of continuity wives tale..
