Boats that look like a A27 FC?

Post by JT48348 »

Issue #88 of Small Craft Advisor Magazine Jun/Aug 2014 has a nice article on a boat called a Midship 25/Dawson 26, a center cockpit sailboat that looks remarkably similar to the Albin 27 FC minus the pilothouse. Sometimes two masted. I have a copy if someone would like to borrow, just pm me, purely for research purposes.

The boat is approximately 1 ft shorter than the A27. They say the weight ranges from 4000-5700 pounds depending on where you look. Similar beam and waterline. The hull shape is not the same at the keel. But the upper decks--looks like a A27 FC without the pilothouse? I found the similarilties an interesting oddity.

Looking at the hull one can see a bit of the the older Macgregor swing keels. Nice find.

I recently located one of these in Detroit area. $1200 boat and trailer. Incredible deal. But I don't have room.
This is a very well built boat, but no where near the interior volume of the A27.

Issue #88 of Small Craft Advisor Magazine Jun/Aug 2014
Funny you should mention Small Craft Advisor Magazine. In the early 2000s I subscribed to that magazine while I owned a Montgomery 15 pocket cruiser which I later sold in 2005. In 2002 and 2003 I trailered said Monty 15 "Scamp" from Phoenix to Monterey, CA to participate in the Cruiser Challenge races which were sponsored by the Potter Yachters of Oakland, CA and Small Craft Advisor Magazine. I took 3rd place in the small boat division (16 ft & under) racing against Potter 15s and several other Monty 15's both times. If you happen to have a collection of some of those old back issues from 2002, for example Issue #18 Nov/Dec 2002, and 2003 you'll see write ups on those races.

Also a gentleman named John Edwards (no relation to the disgraced politician of the same name) did a trailering "circumnavigation" with his Montgomery 17 "Miss T" and wrote a series of articles about it starting with "Trailersailing USA" in Issue #20 Mar/Apr 2003 that was published in the magazine (I'm mentioned in the article as one of the participants in the prior year's Chesapeake Monty owners' rendezvous when I had cruised with him and several other Monty sailors on the Chesapeake), and in 2003 he trailered his M17 out West from his home base in South Carolina and stopped in Phoenix and stayed overnight at my house, then continued to the California Coast. He joined up with me and other Lake Pleasant sailors for a cruise from Marina Del Rey to Catalina Island and also did the 2003 Cruiser Challenge in Monterey.

Someone took a picture of me sailing Scamp off Monterey during the 2003 event, and Jerry Montgomery, the designer and original builder of the Monty 15 used it for several years up until at least 2010 in a recurring ad in Small Craft Advisor for his rigging service.

The 2nd photo below is from the awards ceremony held in the Monterey Yacht Club clubhouse for the 2003 races. I'm 2nd from right in the lineup. The guy sitting at the table in white T shirt and ball cap with his back to the camera is John Edwards, the "circumnavigator" .

Of course since then I've succumbed to "the power of the Dark Side" and moved on to our Albin 25 pocket trawler.

Winga 25 Family Motorsailer

This is a Swedish boat that looks very similar to the Albin 25 but with a canoe stern. If you search YouTube for "Winga 25" there are several Swedish videos of the boat in action. In particular an impressive sailing video called "Sejtur Winga 25

Length
7.50 m
Width
2.80 m
Depth
0.90 m
Deplacement
2500

I was searching for sailing videos of the Albin 25 and ran across this. I'm putting in chain plate reinforcements this weekend. for my A27 mast project.

Don123's pic is of my Albin 30 FC which is basically a 28 with an extension for the aft cabin. Always nice to see "Bidgood" on this forum.
