Sounds like a jet engine hum.

Post by Magnarae »

I ran out to Montauk and Block Island for the Holiday week. As I was pulling into Montauk Inlet, I noticed what sounds like a jet engine hum. Its not coming from the engine. If I am at idle in gear it sound like as whooshing sound coming from under the boat. I also noticed it as I was at idle in gear with following seas. Any ideas?

Did you have any pumps, Ac or genset running at the time? Did the wake behind the boat look clean and normal?

No pumps or anything running. the wake behind was clean. I hear this also in the back bay when I slowly throttle up. It is no louder with the engine box open.

Does it go away at high throttle or get worse? Have you checked all your hoses/intake/exhaust for leaks? Can you walk around the boat as someone else drives to localize the sound?

All hoses tight. No air leak or intake leak. The noise fades away once throttled up.

Does it only happen in gear? Have you replaced the cutlass bearing recently?

It happens only in gear. We left Block Island RI this morning and in gear at 5kts or so with 4 to 5 ft following seas, I could hear it pretty loud. Once I accelerate the noise goes away. The boat runs great. I have not replaced the cutlass bearing.

Following seas, yup, east winds and fog today here in Moriches. Any fog?
