Major overhaul

Post by Veebyes2 »

Anyone else done one?

Our 1996 32 is about due. Haulout will be early Sep & launch will likely be June 2009.

We have had the boat since 12/99 & have overnighted 30-40 nights per year since. It is time for new cabin upholstery & replacement of faucets etc. We are also planning on hauling the engine out, replaceing all hoses & gaskets & giving it a paintjob.

My biggest grumble about the 32 is the lack of engine access. This is largly due to the two 130 gal fuel tanks on either side. This gives the 32 a huge cruising range but it is not needed at all here in Bermuda. The aluminium tanks are showing their age so the plan is to install new smaller tanks. While I am at it I'll repaint the whole engine compartment & replace all bilge pump hoses etc.

Big job. In a sick sort of way I am sort of looking forward to it. Don't know what the costs will be. I am the labour. Very rough 'guestimate' is around $20K. Big savings is that there will be no storage fees however the haulout/trailer costs each way are about $600.

Next year will be the first since 1982 that we will not be doing overnight boating. We should rough through it though. Mid April to late July we are planing a MD to AK trip.

Well, you've got the 5th wheel to keep you busy. Get yourself some sort of lightweight inflatable that you can strap to the top of the trailer or something and use on the lakes and waterways up here in the PNW.

It sounds like you're planning quite the overhaul, which is both exciting and intimdating at once. Can't wait to see it done. Make sure you take lots of pictures along the way. The knowledge you gain about the boat along the way will be valuable not just to you, but to the rest of us here as well. We're looking forward to having a resident "expert".

"Expert" is defined as someone who knows more & more about less & less till he knows absolutely everything about nothing.

I did more or less the same thing to my Albin 27 13 years ago. Quite an excercise. It was a better than new boat when finished. You find stuff the boat builders don't think you are ever going to see.

God bless them.

It was good to hear from you and see you were still out there. It sounds like you have quite a project lined up, I wish you well. Is that your commercial boat or your private boat?

Hi Denis. Trust you had an uneventful trip.

My Albin is licensed to carry passengers but, given the nature of the business, it is not out every day. My Evans 32 workboat is in storage & For Sale.

Time to get out of the business.
