Starting battery

Post by Saltdog »

I have a 2001 28' TE , it is powered with a Yanmar 6LP-ste. I need to replace the starting battery (for that matter all of the batteries). Does anybody have any guess what kind of a starting battery I have or should have? I can't get to it to look at it, and I would like to have the new batteries before I take out the old.

thanks in advance

You yanmar guys and your single starting batteries :P lol. Honestly if you have anything smaller than a 27 or a 31 I would upgrade...you allways want a battery with the max cca and reserve minutes/ah you can fit. On my boat I had to change it around, had a pair of 4d's but the peninsulars require two batteries to start so I put in a pair of grp 24s with 880cca and 1000mca in there in place of one of the 4ds. Everything runs off the 4d and the 24s just start the motor. Im thinking of getting a 4th battery that is a dedicated genny start battery. Honestly if I had the space and the energy, Id love to have 2 grp 27 and a 8d house. But it won't fit easily...also I would go with a agm if your charger can handle them, the batteries plus inhouse brand is made by northstar batteries but are much cheaper.

I did a group 31 for starting and a 8D for house. Both are AGM seem to work just fine for being one of those single battery guys! HaHa

Once again I have been side tracked. Went down to the boat to check over everything once it had all settled to find I had a leaking raw water pump. Ironic really since I helped my buddy replace his yesterday when I was servicing my engine. Yanmar quoted me £180 for the rebuild kit but once apart I was able to determine that it's just two bearings and two shaft seals. Cost to rebuild two pumps £29 with like for like parts from a local bearing supplier.
