remote air cleaner/flame arrestor

Has anyone put a remote filter/arrestor setup on their motor? I has posted in the TE section about kn filter/arrestor but realized none will fit in the tiny available space on the peninsular between the turbo and engine intake. It was suggested using an airsep and adapting it. Which got me thinking, I should be able to get a nice radiused plastic or aluminum universal 'cold air intake' piping in there to move the filter/arrestor to the side of the motor. I was wondering if anyone had done this? There shouldn't be a problem moving it to the side of the motor right? Would you go plastic or aluminum (I'm leaning towards aluminum just for the melt resistance)

I have done that on diesel trucks and it will not be a problem. Make sure the tubing ID is large enough you don't want to starve the engine of air.
I would use steel tubing its easier to work with. You can buy silicone hose adapters cheap online and they can take the temp.
Make sure you support the end of the filter k&ns have a weak neck. I broke one in one trip when I had one on my Mainship. Went to an "S&B" (same concept) and that lasted.

That's what I figured. I've done it in cars shouldn't be any different. Just didn't know if I was missing something stupid. I measured the turbo inlet it's 3" if I cn get away with just a 90 I'll go 3.5" tube with a step down at the turbo, if I have to go further and I can make it fit I'll use 4"

Sounds like a plan. Going bigger will only help, remember that the turbo sucks in a lot of volume.

Unless you feel that you're getting dirty air (unusual on a boat vs a car or truck) and need a better filter - Or, you're going to relocate the filter to a place where it will get cooler air, I don't see much benefit from a filter relocation, especially if the tubing run must have 90 degree elbows. The elbows will provide a restriction unless they are of significantly larger diameter than the current plumbing

Problem is that my oem filter is shot, peninsular doesn't make the filter for the 97 and older motors anymore, so I need to retrofit something. So I figure with the cone shape of the kn marine filter I can prob get away with a minimum of tubing. Turbo flange diameter is 3". Im hoping to sneak 4" tubing in there, with any luck a single short 90

So this is what o got. Im gonna find out fri if it fits, lol. Measurements say it should be fine. It's a 4" tight radius 90, with a adapter down to the turbo and a 4" marine flame arrestor/ filter from k&n

So I got the new air filter on. Ended up having to add a second 90 this time a 3", which is the same size as the turbo flange. Worked out really well and actually made it easier to hook up the crankcase vent tube. She runs awesome with the new filter on there

Sexy. And that "top mount" turbo adds such an important safety factor to your exhaust..
