Abin 32 cable length.

Post by Veebyes2 »

Before I try calling Albin tomorrow, would anyone happen to know the cable length for a Cummins powered 32 or 32+2?

Straight run lengths add up to about 15'.

My shift cable broke yesterday as we were approaching a mooring leaving us stuck in gear. We got on the mooring by shutting the engine down & drifting up to it & getting the pickup line on deck & around a cleat very quickly. We had lots of space & little wind issues that time.

We disconnected the cable from the tranny so the engine could be shifted by hand. The Admiral got demoted to chief engineer. A whistle was used to communicate with the 'engine room'. 2 blasts for forward. 3 blasts for reverse. 1 blast for reverse.

No boating time was lost this weekend due to this mishap however controling a boat in this manner is not an advisable way to do it.

The real challenge was getting onto our 'home' mooring in a 15-20kt wind with a concrete wall 100' downwind of our mooring. No room for a mistake. We did it! Have to have unquestioned trust in your crew to do this stuff.

My admiral would NOT have been happy to be demoted to chief engineer.

Thanks Don. I found a 20'er in my den of marine goodies. It fits. My budding marine diesel mechanic son & I did the change over in a couple hours.

As far as the demotion to Chief Engineer goes, there was not much choice. We don't have a Sea Tow here. You have to be resourceful.

The funny thing about this incident is that it happend in the same place as a similar control failure 4 or 5 years ago. We were moving a raftup, 5 boats wide, as one. Sometimes we are just too lasy to breakup the raftup, move, then reform it again. We simply stay together & use the engines of the 2 outside boats as you would a twin engined boat. Simple, right???? Not if you ring down for reverse on one side & the whole shifter comes off in the skippers hand!!!!!! Never seen him run so fast from the flybridge to his lower helm station. Hilarious!
