Yesterday the United Nations World Heritage Committee announced that the Rideau Canal had been designated a "Word Heritage Site". The canal had long been designated a Canadian National Heritage Site but this new UN designation adds a global dimension, putting it in such exalted company as the pyramids and the great wall of China.
By co-incidence I just finished my annual cruise of the canal from Ottawa to Kingston (for the Albin rendezvous), on to Picton and Belleville, and back to Ottawa. While I have cruised the canal many times, I have never seen it in better shape and they are making continuous improvements for cruising boaters, such as adding more over-night dock spaces with power at lock stations, while still preserving the overall 175 year old character of the system.
