Albin 27 thermostat location?

Post by REO »

We purchased our 1984 Albin 27 a year ago. It has a Lehman Peugeot 4D61 engine that was listed as recently rebuilt. It runs great, uses no oil and does not smoke. But, it runs way too cool-125 degrees after warm up. I figured I could replace a stuck thermostat this winter. But, I can't find it?? I have removed the filler tank and both hoses from the water pump. There is a sleeve in the hose from the oil cooler to the heat exchanger, but it looks like just a way to adapt two hoses to get the right curves. I have squeezed and felt around every hose and can find no indication of a thermostat housing. Maybe the rebuild included removing the thermostat-But where is the housing?

Second question: Where can I get a replacement thermostat. I called American Diesel and they have no 4D61 parts and will not have them in the future. I spoke to BOMAC -same story. Motorad used to have them , but they are out of stock and not planning to make more.

238-170 motorad is thermostat. I'll have to look tomorrow to give you a better description where it is. Sounds like they never put it in.

I have been looking for a hose that is two sizes, and can not find one. I assume that there should be a thermostat housing in the line between the two sizes of hose. Can not find that either. Which hose should have the housing in it? Where does it come from and go to? What size is it? That info should lead me to the right place. I suspect that someone removed the thermostat hose and forced a hose that is a bit too big on one end and a bit too small on the other end. If there is no housing, I assume that I could just purchase a generic in line housing to fit the correct hose location with the correct temperature thermostat? I have found several for sale on line. Seems like that would be a lot easier than finding original parts?

I found mine at an O'Rielly's. They let me look on their racks. I'll check my notes and see if I can find a number. Do you have the dimensions?

Thanks Captvic
I did go to O'Rileys. They have the correct thermostat in their catalog. Motorad 238-170. But it is out of stock and they told me that their supplier does not expect any more to be made. I am hopeful that once I determine which hose it needs to be placed in, I can adapt an aftermarket housing with a new thermostat.
I just looked at the website for Rock Auto and they seem to have the thermostat-1976 Peugeot 504-2,1 Diesel as well as some hoses that look like they are a different diameter on both ends. I can't tell where these hoses fit or how the thermostat fits into them. But, we seem to be making progress.

Hi reo
The thermostats should be in the hose on the port side that goes from the side of the head to the heat exchanger , you can see in Capt. Vic's picturer.
I posted 2 pictures in the yahoo group site of a brand new hose and thermostat, usually replace together I think.
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Alb ... 1804728754
If you are not on there I can post here too.
Putting the thermostats in the hose is unusual but a standard system . The thermostats has a special 1/2 wide ring arround it so it does not cut into the hose.
Try here for some interesting photos and parts list for variations on the same base engine.
http://www.indenor-retro.de/Kataloge%20 ... 202015.pdf
Look at page 21 for the thermostats.
There are also some thermostats used in other marine variants of the engine , like Volvo and Ventus that made a more normal housing for the thermostat.
The Germans have sites dedicated to the engine as it was so popular in vehicules, As it lasted so long.
Also check out here
https://www.franzose.de/en/Peugeot/Alle ... =Thermosta
but the problem here is actually picking the right operating temperature ..... But in your case anything would be good!
In the photo of the spare I have it shows 72deg C as the opening temperature, cooler than many on the site above. But I don't see it making a lot of difference! Diesels like to run hot anyway, too cold running is death to engines.gas and diesel.
Hope this helps.

Reo,

Be careful putting the metal insert over the oil filter. I made that mistake and the pipe vibrations caused a leak in the top of the filter. Big mess. I split a hose and used that as a protective barrier. Good luck.

Thermostat location found! Thanks to everyone who helped
Once I located the correct hose I could see where the thermostat had been. Next step will be to order a thermostat from Rock Auto. I have not found any hoses on line that look like the correct one. But, I will take the old one into O'Rileys and try to match something.

I feel very fortunate that the Albin Owners group exists. I hope I can help other owners when I learn which end is up with my boat.

If you find the thermostat hose and the other curved one let us know. They have me stumped . I bought another motor that has them on it but they are not new.

Things are not going as I expected. When I tried to order the thermostat from Rock Auto it came up no longer available. Same story as O'Rileys, NAPA, Motorad, American Diesel and BOMAC. O'Rileys found me a similarly shaped thermostat. But it is quite a bit smaller. I'd like to stay with original design stuff, but it is beginning to look like an in line housing with a different design thermostat may be the only option. Unless somebody comes up with a new source??? I guess this is why the thermostat was not replaced by the previous owner?
Similar story on the hoses. However, Rock Auto seems to have a few hoses-particularly one that looks like the longer twisty one that comes off the lower water pump outlet. I got ready to order it even though there is no way to tell if it actually is the right hose. But, the hose costs $18 plus $40 for shipping from England. Yips! and it may not fit.
Tomorrow I will take some hoses to town and see what I can find. More later.

The same thing happened to me when I ordered from rock auto. Try parts geek. I know I got one will try to figure out where. I ordered from rock auto a water pump and thermostat. They said neither was available so I ordered somewhere else and then the water pump showed up. Now I have two water pumps.
