Missing Holding Tank
Aargh Part#2. Boat has no holding tank (obviously been removed)... Anyone have pics of the proper setup? I have an electric head plumbed directly overboard. Advice, diagrams, pictures, anything at all to get me started?

Re: Missing Holding Tank
I haven't installed mine yet. I got a 35 gallon waste tank in the starboard side. There was a good write up on the web from a couple that had traveled in there albin 27 from Vermont. They must of taken their website down. I think I have the diagram some where. Basically toilet to holding tank. Then t to suck it out. Or t goes to macerater pump for discharge overboard. They had a way to wash out the macerater pump with fresh water so it didn't clog up with junk. This system also made you compliant for no discharge zones like lake Champlain VT. That's what I'm trying to put in. Good luck

Re: Missing Holding Tank
A little detail I found out to my embarrasment.
Make sure the vent from the holding tank has no dips in the pipe but rises steadily to the vent fitting in the hull.
My vent pipe had a dip in it and when the tank was full the waste was forced up the vent and overboard. Eventually the waste left in the dip of the vent pipe solidified and blocked the vent. I happily pumped away but noticed that the pump got stiffer.
Next time I had the tank pumped out the marina guy opened the deck fitting and a gout of sewage shot six foot into the air, all over him and all over my boat!
My continued pumping with a blocked vent had pressurised the plastic holding tank.
The marina guy was very decent about it. Another example of how nice Americans are or maybe because marina employees are used to getting shat on.

Re: Missing Holding Tank
I have an electric head coupled to a Todd 20 gallon holding tank mounted under the starboard lazarrette seat - It's a perfect fit for that compartment an since it's only 10 inches tall, you can still store lots of stuff in there on top of it
http://www.tank-depot.com/productdetail ... =85-1666WH
The head is plumbed directly into the tank and it can be emptied either through the deck fitting (at a pump-out station) or overboard using a standard 12 volt macerator pump - No valves other than the one on the macerator

Re: Missing Holding Tank
Sprig: what's the make and model of your tank? I have been looking into getting the largest waste tank possible. When I lived aboard I could go approximately one week before a pump out with one adult guest on aboard. If I was solo a tank might last 19-14 days. This was using an electric toilet.
I'm curious how the 35gallon fit in the starboard engine compartment and how you got it past the engine. If the engine was removed do you think I could go larger?
If you have pictures of your install I would love to see that.

Re: Missing Holding Tank
Hi sorry about not responding sooner. Just looked at tank it is a Todd from west marine #2633659 36 gallon.its 14 inches high that's the maximum height you can get in there by the motor. I only had to remove air breather and a hose and valve going back to stuffing box. I think it is 22 or23 inches wide. I have to make an extension to support it. Don't put the extension on first or you will not get the tank in. Probably going to slide a three quarters inch plywood under it which is epoxy coated. Jt if the motor was removed you could get a bigger tank in there. If you could find one without paying a fortune. Strange thing the starboard side is smaller then the port side by a lot. I haven't sat down to figure that one out with a tape measure. Hope this helps Chris

Re: Missing Holding Tank
FWIW, I am in the process of installing a larger holding tank in my A25. Going from 9 gallon capacity to 20 gallons. Old tank was 18.75 L x 12.75 W x 10.75 H. New tank is 18 W x 30 L x 10.5 H. That's about as big a tank as possible for an Albin 25 given the dimensional constraints involved, and to do that I have to relocate the batteries to the storage area under the starboard bench seat. I'm in the process of finishing up the electrical portion of the project now, ie rewiring etc and hope to begin installing the tank next week.
I got a new tank from Ronco via PlasticWaterTanks.com ( http://www.plasticwatertanks.com/c/rss6 ... s-for-sale ) Cost: $325 including custom location of hose fittings, a 4" inspection plate, and shipping.
Photo below shows where the new tank goes, under the floorboard at the helm station. Batteries and the old tank have been removed since this picture was taken. The red lines outline where the new tank will fit. Once I finish with the electrical portion (all new battery cables, new on-board charger, new master switch, new AC distribution panel & breakers, etc), I'll need to fabricate a support structure for the extended length of the new tank.
Luckily where I live it's been sunny days & dry mild weather with daytime temps in the upper 60s to mid 70s, so every day I bring the boat from the storage yard & park it in the street in front of the house to work on it. I wish we had a big yard where I could keep the boat full time, but we're in a HOA tract neighborhood & not allowed to keep it here overnight.

That's good info Sprig. My goal was to get to 40 gal for holding if I could. How much bigger could I go with the engine removed?Sprig1 wrote:Hi sorry about not responding sooner. Re: Missing Holding Tank
Todd doesn't show a holding tank sized between 35 and 55 gallons, but their 35 is just 36 x 16 x 15.5 which should fit fine on the starboard side without having to widen the platform (assuming you're not putting anything else there) and best of all, it sells for less than $200

Re: Missing Holding Tank
Hi Jt the 36 gallon Todd I got was from west marine. Todd makes different sizes for different people. The dimensions where 14 x22x30 they have a55 gallon 20x13x55. I forget the distance between the bulkheads. As Don says I don't see any tanks form 36 to 55. It took me forever to decide on the size tank. I had a bigger one ordered but it was unavailable. Just remember what it was like getting the old watertank out. It was 40 gallons and it had to be cut up to get it out of the boat. They must of put it in before the motor.

Re: Missing Holding Tank
Don: how did you get it in Lazarette? I'm assuming rear berth. Can you take a pic for me. I'm going to place mine there as well. Q: are your rear cabin berths open all the way forward?.... To wit, if you plug your tank into the Lazarette, is the poor Starboard aft sleeper listening/watching bodily waste sloshing to and fro?

Re: Missing Holding Tank
Yes, the tank slides in from the rear berth. We have a bulkhead (with an air conditioner) which separates that compartment from the rear berth completely. The tank is only 10 inches tall, so it doesn't interfere at all with the full 6 foot + sleeping position on that side. The tank is 30 inches long and the compartment is about 33 inches, so there is just room at the front for all of the 1 1/2" plumbing fittings. I pressed the tank up against the ridge close to the fuel tank and then screwed a 2 x 2 to the floor on the other side. Some screw eyes on both sides and the tank is lashed down with several strands of 3/16ths rope. It's wedged in there tightly and cannot move. The macerator is on the forward bulkhead out near the hull

No you're notrnummi wrote:Gotcha... so I'm missing a bulkhead too. Lovely....
As the boat came from the factory, both aft berths are open to their respective lazarrettes - Thankfully so, as it makes it easier to do projects by crawling in there from the berths. We added a 'bulkhead' of sorts at the foot of the starboard bunk to close it off from the lazarrette for the reasons you mentioned - Didn't want to hear (or smell) the holding tank and we have a diesel tank there too, so didn't want to smell that either. Also, that's where the aft cabin air conditioner is located . . . . didn't want the A/C blowing any smells around either. Our portside bunk is still open to the lazarrette - I have a pair of AGM golf cart batteries in that compartment. If I had bulkheaded that side too, I could have used standard flooded golf cart batteries, but I need easy access to that compartment, so I omitted the bulkhead for maintenance reasons . . . . it's very handy to be able to crawl in there
