Manual hand pump on the 28
Dose anybody know if the manual hand pump mounted on the starboard side of the 28 pumps out the keel and not the bilge. Or is it just a back up when all else fails.

Re: Manual hand pump on the 28
I'd say it's only a back up. The pick up on the end of the hose is too big and the hose too short to be of any use while stationary. Underway any water will be in the stern.

Tree, I almost agree with you. However, I would think that there must be a "way" to get the water out of the keel other than the hull plug in the keel. In the spring I will send down my camera on a selfie stick and observe where the hose goes.
Take care and enjoy the holidays.

My hose lays under the engine and was not hooked up. One of many things I fixed... The crab winch blocked the hose connection on the manual backup pump so unhook it right?

Re: Manual hand pump on the 28
Ours didn't pump anything when we bought the boat last year. The bellows was cracked, the hoses disconnected and the thru hull capped. Instead of replacing the manual pump I put a 10" sub woofer in its place!

How do you know if there is water in the keel? Where does it enter? I looked at my keel but did not see a plug? Thanks for the info. Still learning the boat. Mike

This pump meets the requirement of the Coast Guard to have a "manual dewatering device" on board, most often a bucket, but if boarded by coast guard and do not have a bucket on board show them the manual pump.

The sub-woofer is really nice.... but I'm pretty certain that if you ever are sinking, and the electric pumps fail or are not keeping up, that the sub-woofer won't be particularly helpful... You might live to regret that decision.
The one you removed (when in working condition) can pump around 9GPM.

Mike The pictures above show the plug on the keel. Water can get into the bilge by rain water or washing the boat down via the rod holders and the deck hatches. I also included a picture of Great South Bay Long Island, New York from last week. December and 55 degree weather is truly abnormal.

Re: Manual hand pump on the 28
I did not see that on our keel. Is the bilge open to let water in the keel?

Re: Manual hand pump on the 28
He's the water from the bilge can get into the keel at that level and drain out. I followed my manual pump hose yesterday and it appears to be sitting just at the top of the keel. About 1-1.5" above the drain hole.
