Coast Guard rescue 2 off 28 Albin in Fire Island Inlet

Post by Magnarae »

I came across this on the Coast Guard site.Does anyone know if and how the boat was salvaged. According to Newsday, the boaters had transmission problems in the inlet. Not sure how accurate that is. I looked up the boat and it is listed as a 1996 28 Albin out of East Islip. The name of the boat looks to be Shell Bank.

The Albin lost its hardtop and came ashore on the beach. I did see pictures of the Alnin less its hardtop on the beach. The boat was picked up and brought somewhere for insurance inspection. The rumor is that the craft had just had a tranny overhaul, which might explain the failure.

I ran into a new Albin owner, Jim at a marina in Bay Shore. He had the pictures on his cell.

I met the owner of the Albin 28 that was destroyed in FI Inlet last October. The owner was coming through FI inlet and the seas were somewhat nasty. All of a sudden, his tranny seized. He and his son were forced to drop anchor. The waves in the inlet were breaking over the hard top, They called the CG and they sent out the 44 which could not get close to the boat as well as the SCPD. The CG brought in a helo from Atlantic City and a basket was dropped and the men were rescued.
The problem, as per the owner, he had the tranny replaced 2 week earlier, He had a Fortress anchor secured in the engine room with line. He believes that when the yard replaced the tranny they had to move the anchor, Doing so, the anchor and line were not secured as it had been before the new installation. The anchor line that was attached to the anchor became free due to sea conditions and wrapped itself around the shaft.

Interesting, the insurance company paid up. The ironic thing was that the owner had reduced his hull liability to save some money, which turned out not to be in his best financial interest. The boat eventually washed up on the beach and was considered salvage. The only thing he was able to get off the boat was his sunglasses. The winch and prop were now owners of the yard and are not available. The owner is a retired NYC fire fighter who drove the fire boats out of Queens. He has since bought another 28 Albin. He loves the 28.

Sad about their 28. Nice to know he's back in another one.

I wonder if the insurance company will try to subrogate against the marina where the yard monkeys didn't resecure the stowed anchor.

Rob, they may try. However, as the owner told me there is no way of proving it.
