Builders Plate - Person Capacity

Post by OldDemps »

Is there a "builders plate" or guideline on the 28TE that outlines the boats weight capacity or limit of persons aboard?

All my little boats have one on the transom, but I'm not sure how they handle it with larger vessels.

Basically what is a safe person capacity for calm, protected waters for 28TE?

It turns out that there's a formula for this. Boat length (in feet) times beam divided by 15.

So 28 x 9.5 = 266
266 / 15 = 17.7333

So there ya go. 17+ on a calm day. Although RicM would tell you you need a larger holding tank!

A capacity plate is required on vessels less than 21 feet in length. It may give a figure for the number of people and or the total weight that can be carried aboard. I believe that the number of persons that can be carried is based on an average weight of 150 lbs. per person, so that may be totally inaccurate if heavier passengers are carried. You can check this information, of course. The A28 will not have such a plate, as its length exempts this notification because of size.

Thank you. I understood the formula to be for boats under 20 feet. But online, it showed an example using a 30 foot boat.
17 people on board would not work for me, that's for sure. Just think about the volume of space consumed just by the life jackets much less the head capacity. LOL
