Cast iron exhaust manifold
I am on the hunt for the exhaust manifold for my Nissan LD 28. Not the mixing elbow. I'm debating rebuild versus re-power of my 27 FC. To rebuild Nissan I will need to replace this manifold. Anyone have any idea where I can look to find this part? My manifold has serious rust issues, hate to spend money on this motor if I can't do anything about this problem. Thanks for any leads or information you can provide. Mark.

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
I feel ur pain Mark. But Don makes some valid points and I've come around to his way of thinking. Keep the Nissan keep it running.
I think the exhaust manifold is the same as the LD28 engine used in cars. Check the engine manual and the Marinized LD28 addendum I posted in the documents section.
I was able to find one online $125.

Find a salvage yard with a 1982 Nissan Maxima and part it out.

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
Are you sure they're the same Joe? My research showed the marine manifold to be water cooled and the automotive one most likely isn't. You guys have the engine there to look at, so it should be easy to checkJT48348 wrote:I think the exhaust manifold is the same as the LD28 engine used in cars.
Good find if they are the same - The one from a car shouldn't be rotted out at all. Might be advisable to pick up the injector pump off that engine too, if it's still available. Might come in handy one day as a rebuildable spare

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
The marine manifold is a different animal, it is exhaust and intake in one, and is water cooled. If only life could be so simple, thanks for the help guys. I'm taking manifold to town to try and get second opion if it is usable. The exhaust is a make or break on the re-man or replace issue. Thanks, Mark

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
Well did not get good news on manifold, automotive machine shop said it was past repair. Guess I start the search for the replacement engine. So far Yanmar and Cummins have replyed to my emails. The games afoot. Thanks, Mark.

Look at Beta Marine diesels too. They use Kubota engines and parts for them are easier to find and cheaper than for many other boat engines

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
Mark: have you shopped around for a custom manifold or a remanufactured one? I know you said you were quoted $7800 for a new manifold but that's seems high.
Have you looked at http://www.messamarine.com
Since you have the manifold off and are at the end of the line, what about sending them the part and seeing what it costs to have one made. its got to be cheaper than that. Maybe the key is finding a cheaper source.

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
Thanks JT, I'll check out that web sight, I must have miss spoken at some point, to re-build the LD 28 was going to run 7800. I was told there is a place in Washington State that makes custom manifolds, you send your old one to them. The fellow that mentioned it said to expect around 2500. At this point I find myself rereading the Cummins ad several times a day. Some evenings my wife and I go to the marina and just set on the boat and plan trips, our day will come. Thanks, Mark.

You might consider these folks. Maybe they can help. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=7209&p=46085#p46085.
I also had a heat exchanger built by Seakamp in Bellingham. Maybe they could give you some advice.

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
A while a go on a different thread here
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3218#p22011
A similiar issue was discussed.
To make a new cast iron manifold water cooled would be very expensive .I am in that business.
Probably a $20-30000.00 project. And that's asumining I had a drawing!
If you can find somebody that would make one as a SS , Inconel, Monel weldment it might be reasonable.
Does the exhaust manifold really need cooling? Only the exhaust hose really needs it, hence the riser. Or is it a safety thing?
In the thread above it was suggested the gas engines exhausts are raw water cooled and so replaced often, where as diesels ( lower temps?) are cooled with the freshwater/antifreeze water and last longer...... Is this true?
Gas engine manaifolds are made as aftermarket replacements as there is the need , but diesels manifolds are not made by aftermarket as there is no demand.
I think the advise to run you engine WOT for 15 min before you shut it down would probably help a lot with mataining a gunk free exhaust system. Since most of us here only run at half throttle we are doing our engines a disservice .
( but running WOT is so hard to do!)
So prehaps the answer is to reengineing with say 30 hp engine ,run hard it will last forever with less trouble ,unless you are already running close to WOT With your 4D61 or L28d........I could not , too noisey!

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
My manifold research has led to a dead end. Examination of the manifold yeilds no numbers of any kind for a replacement from Nissan or aftermarket. Based off the exhaust port layout it looks slightly complicated, and I could find nothing in my research that would match as a bolt on. Further research online indicates there's nothing standard that fits to the Ld28 unlike some other Nissan diesels.
Further I contacted http://www.mesamarine.com/ and inquired if they could match a replacement from their extensive inventory or had any other suggestions. Sent them extensive photos etc. The idea of a one off custom manifiold was next on the list. They reported they would need the old one as a go-by and then a new one would be approx $6,000 No exact estimate without part in hand.

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
Maybe replace it with a Ford Lehman? This guy has a pair of them for sale

At least you know you can find parts for one of those when the time comes

Re: Cast iron exhaust manifold
Ha!
That's no Ford Lehman it's a 'Lehman power'. Peugeot based 4D61 that we all know and love? Actually it's an older one with the bolt down injectors so could be a 50 hp de tuned version for the Asian market.
What I don't know is ' Lehman power' different company from Ford Lehman?
Warren
Nice paint job too, not quite the right red!
