DRAIN PLUG ON 28?

Post by halfmoon »

Do our 28s have a transom drain plug? Seems that I remember a 1/2" drive plug.

Definitely has a transom drain; tightening/removal tool size of 1/2" sounds about right. I use the "L" wrench that came with boat and it seems to me that it's 1/2".

The drain plug is in the keel, not in the transom. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7171&p=42746&hilit=garboard#p42746

Nancy, mines in the transom. I've plugged it up permanently as I thought it was a bit odd having a drain plug in a boat any bigger than 20'!

Our 28 had a drain in the transom, not sure it was of much use though unless the boat
was stored very bow high. We added a drain forward near the shower pump which is actually
the low point. Any water that collects will freeze in the colder areas over the winter which
can cause bad things to happen:)

Our 35 has a drain low in the keel but water can collect forward of
the bulkhead as well. If I had thought of it, I would have connected
the two sections with 1/2" pipe when I had it opened up so any water
that managed to ge in would drain when in storage. I think I can still do
this but just not nearly as easily.

That's interesting about some of the 28's having transom plugs. That isn't the low drainage point on our boat. We like removing the garboard drain plug in the fall to avoid the possibility of water freezing in the keel and causing damage.

Rcwhite, we also have to mop up water in the forward bilge in the fall.

Nancy. I fitted a small pump in that forward section feeding to the shower sump. Put a small foot switch in and hidden the switch under the carpet by the table. When we finish for the day any remaining water is pumped into the shower sump then pumped over the side. Always have a dry bilge now!

Is your new pump in addition to a bilge pump in the forward cabin?

Yep! It's a small pump about 360 gph sat in the vee of the hull. If you look at your shower sump there are a number of different size outlets. One has now become an inlet (1/2" diameter tube size) where the new pump fill the shower sump to drain the last 8-10 gallons of water the main pump can't get to.

What pump did you use?

I think it was either a Rule or a whale. Standard small output bilge pump. I reckon one of those small pencil shape pumps used submerged in fresh water tanks would work a treat.

That is a great idea. I'll have to install one on my boat. My previous 1997 28 TE had no connection between the forward bilge and the main bilge so it was never a problem. After draining everything I could with the forward bilge pump on my present boat I hand pumped the remainder in preparation for putting the boat on the hard for hurricane season. I was surprised that it was about 5 gallons. Keeping that out of there will really help. I like a clean, dry bilge. Thanks.
