I installed a 5,000 BTU unit (cold and heat) myself a few years ago. As best I can remember the cost was around $1,800.

In 2013 I had Ocean Options, Inc, out of Tiverton, RI, install a 10k BTU Marine Air unit (Vector Turbo Self-Contained VTD10K-HV). This included everything from the thru-hull, pump, wiring, building the shelf for the unit to sit on under the forward berth, etc. Total cost was around $6k. The unit provides both heat and AC.

The unit is great. Set it and forget it. And yes, it can get cold if you want it too. It's one of those things where once you do it you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

I purchased a 6000 btu unit from MarinAire out of Florida with all the fittings for $1500. Had Marine Specialists in Ronkonkoma install it for $1400. System works great and Marine Specialists does an excellent installation. Big asset I had was my 28 came with the thru hull for the raw water pick up.

Bigger is not necessarily better. The unit needs to run long enough to provide De-humidification as well as cooling.

Not sure if you've made your move on this yet, but my factory install from Albin on my 28 to cool both cabin and pilot house was a 10,000 BTU unit. I had the Alaskan bulkhead and the 10K was adequate, but required an outlet in the pilot house as well.

It was installed in April. The benefit was the yacht was till on the hard in my backyard. This made it easier to install the thru hull for the unit to drain on the port side by the sink drain. The installation only took 8-10 hours. The first day they glassed in the support and the following day completed the installation. I also had them install a t-fitting with a shut off valve before the strainer. I put in a stainless steel washing machine hose off the valve to an water inlet at the helm area to flush out and winterize the ac unit.

Had the opportunity to use the ac while we were at Watch Hill, Long Island. Had the temp set for 72 with the hatch open. Worked great, in fact wife complained it was to cold
