28 TE with Volvo D6?

Post by Captain Starbucks »

Hi all,

Just wondering what the board had to say about the Volvo D6? Other than being heavier and more expensive to maintain, is this a good choice?

We may be interested in the 28 for sale in Bellingham. It's been for sale for quite some time, just curious if anyone knows anything about that boat or the D6 with 1100 hours. Is the much heavier D6 being mounted midship (flush deck model) going to be an issue for offshore? I plan on using this boat most of the time between Neah and the Columbia.

Thanks all,

Rob

Search for the user Russell - he has a flush deck with the D6 fitted.

I had a Volvo D6 in my 2005 28 TE, never had a problem, great engine. Good on fuel, and the electronics kept you up to date on all engine functions.

Irish Wake,

Can you give me running RPM and speeds? Fuel burn is also a factor, but I'm really looking for an 18 knot boat. Sounds like the D6 is more efficient and slightly more power, but also weights 1,500 lbs instead of the Yanmar 1,000. That's huge.

Thank you,

Capt. Starbucks: There are some D6 Volvo's down our way in non Albin's. There was a Volvo in a 28 Albin near Brookings, Or. several years ago. All that I heard was good.
The particular boat you are looking at in Bellingham is likely a good one and if I recall has a special and otherwise expensive trolling valve. I know they took in trade on a 31te.
Actually surprised it has not already sold. Personally, I think it a good boat and one not to be missed where you are located.

I am really surprised it has not sold as well. I looked at it last year and wasn't ready to buy. We are much closer being ready to buy now. We'll see!

If I recall the trolling valve on the D6 is electronic so no chance of destroying the gearbox. Lots of boats here have them fitted and nothing but praise. Didn't Nemo have a D6 fitted though that was an engine box model?

This boat is a 2005, the owner said the electronic gear box was a 2006 edition, this boat didn't have that. He did describe some sort of hasp that was thrown over the throttle in the engine bay to prevent the over revving. I had a trolling valve on my last boat with ZF gear box. I was much lower tech and thew a plastic cup over the throttle....I like the hasp idea better.

Irish Wake,

That is very generous of you to post up that information. Thank you very much.

Can I trouble you for engine speed and boat speed also?

No problems in following seas with the extra 500 pounds midships?

I didn't save that information, but as I recall it would cruise at about 22 mph and top out at about 25-26 at that speed it was on the higher fuel consumption. The weight never really made that much of a difference.Topped off with fuel or half tank it performed the same.I also looked through my maintenance records on the boat and the only engine work was a Volvo service rep resetting the cpu because the fuel consumption was off. No charge by Volvo for the trip to the boat to do reset.

Rob, We have been communicating by PM but I finally got back on line and discovered this thread. Just so you know, my boat is the former Irish Wake and I purchased it primarily for the D6 engine and have been very happy with it. I looked at the boat you are considering on Yacht World and it looks like a great boat. The Alaskan bulkhead is a nice feature for security when you are not aboard.

just look in the for sale thread and I have all the engine speeds listed in my old ad. We had the D6 put in our 28ft Albin with a zf and trolling valve.

Boat ran great and engine with trans was a very good set up. A member here bought her and runs her all the time. He will get you info I am sure, John is his name and he's a very nice guy.

I wish you the best.
