28TE horn mounting contraption

Post by Nancy »

Our horn installation looks like a cob job. The black thing is (or used to be) a hard rubber mounting base. It is crumbling and corroded. I'm not sure how everything is supposed to hang together. I'm not sure why the horn wasn't directly fastened to the wooden bracket.

Is this a typical horn installation? I think the horn is an AFI, but what's the rubber base? Looking for ideas on how to put this thing back together.

I might need better photos. It was hard to see what I was doing in the bright sunlight.

Well, that would be a drastic solution!

Mine mounted under the radar also, pretty sure you can buy the brackets separately though? They're only folded stainless steel with four holes in, two for the horn two for mounting.

Mine is under the brow but I don't remember the wedge that your horn mounts too. Created a picture from another.. No ugly mounting..

Is it just fastened to the roof at a single point? If so, is it whippy?

The back is also a mounting point. I will check it out in a few days and report as soon as I repair it. I'm suspecting a diaphragm issue.

I went through 3 horns before realizing that the horn was sloped such that water was running down the inside of the horn and destroying them. Now I have a small rubber wedge that angles the horn downward to avoid the damage. The small rubber wedge doesn't look nearly as ugly :)

Can you give me any details about the rubber wedge?

Rubber, starboard, wood...anything you feel like working with would work. Here's one I made out of starboard.

I did the same as Rob by using a leftover piece of Trex decking material. Just need to keep the horn pitched downward.

Did the same with a wedge on my 28 to pitch the trumpet downward after losing my first horn.

I cured my horn failure issues with one of those stainless plates that just snaps in place in front of the bell. You've seen them on semi truck air horns. It takes about 2 seconds to install.
