28 TE Hull Zinc

Post by catalina_mike »

Anyone have a hull zinc? My new purchase has a bit of a burning issue it looks like and the surveyor recommended installing a hull zinc. The ground buss on the strb side is in-place but wanted to know how others are doing it and what size. Why reinvent the wheel if someone else has already done so.

Thanks and soon all the work starts! Trying to get her shipped down from the Bay Area to Southern Cal...

I have a friend who said because of the copper in paint a bonding issue will look like this around the thru-hulls.

I stopped using copper paint!
Hydrocoat ECO, water-based NON-COPPER paint is nothing short of remarkable. Easy application, super easy clean-up(water-based) and the best anti-fouling performance I've ever experienced in 30+ years of boating. You can even paint metals, including the prop.
After a full season, I did power wash, but really didn't need to!!! Zincs in very good shape too.
Boat hauler claims it's the cleanest hull he's ever seen in later October.
It's also amazing how the gallon can is light weight, without all that copper!

I was going through zincs (rudder and shaft) every 3-4 months and had burning and even some bubbling around the through-hulls. I had the yard do an in-slip corrosion anaylsis and they found no stray current from neighboring boats. I pulled the boat and had them add a large transom zinc (can't tell you the exact size), a galvanic isolator, and a shaft brush. When I put the boat back in the slip I hung a zinc grouper (West Marine) connected to common battery ground over the side to about 2' below waterline. Now my zincs last well over a year and there is no burning of the bottom paint. I can't say which step caused what improvement, but the result is excellent.
