If you buy the "water heater" wrench I suggest you adjust to fit then WELD it so it cant change. Also you will need to cut about half off the handle. Some 1983's (mine) are even farther in under the deck.no fun. Eventually I bought a crowsfoot for a 1/2 socket drive - works great......

It seems that you've solved your packing gland issue.
Before I put dripless seals in I was using a pipe wrench, I didn't have to cut mine. Then I realized that the nut was loose enough that I could use 2 hands to turn it. Remember you need about a drip or 2 every minute to keep the gland lubricated. If it isn't dripping then you'll burn out the packing.
My wife didn't like water in the bilge so I had dripless seals put in.
Next time on the hard you may want to pull the nut completely and remove any old packing material and put in new goretex packing.
Boats are projects waiting to happen so it's good you like them.
Have fun.
Calm seas,

Smackman.

Just a comment but the shaft and the packing gland in the photo don't look real healthy. Have you tested for electrolysis ?

Thanks for the invite Sprig but I'm headed south.
Ref. hoses. When I need one I will make it up from modern hoses of the right bore and bends and use copper pipe and hose clips to make up the shape. The chances of getting the perfect fit I expect are remote.

I agree. One of the jobs needed when she is hauled. Shaft anode? We'll see.

Shaft zinc is a definite. Also consider a Galvanic Isolator. Might save you some problems down the line. Good luck.

Just in case someone runs across this thread and is looking for the adjustable wrench pictured early on, it's generally known as a toilet tank nut adjustable wrench and not a sink wrench (I think) because it is used to tighten and loosen the large nut on the bottom of a toilet tank.
