Fueling up two tanks

Post by team one »

I have 2- 130 gal tanks, what is best method to keep them in balance to prevent boat from listing after drawing down fuel.

Fueling Up Two Tanks

I always leave the valves in cross-over fuel line fully open so the tanks draw down at the same rate.

Yeah, keep the cross flow valves open.

The tradeoff to this is that when sitting at anchor, sometimes the fuel will shift to one tank if your boat is otherwise unballanced, further exaggerating the list. The solution to this is to nip it in the bud and close the fuel valves as soon as you see a list developing. Also, on a recirculating fuel system, simply running the engine for a few minutes should equalize the tanks.

Our boat has a day tank, so the fuel first drains into the day tank, and then is picked up and pumped to the engine. The extra fuel is then deposited back into the main tanks in roughly equal proportions.
