Winter projects/upgrades
Here are some of the changs my 1996 28's going through this winter. Ive completed all the work so far, I may bring in someone for the paint
So far the:
all the thru hull to be replaced, any plastic with SS
sea cocks have been removed, to be serviced and reinstalled
Bottom soda blasted, to get brarrier coated and painted
Redo dash panel, upgrade electronics, simrad with 1kb164 and side scan! Replace switch with blue seas
Replace arch with 11 rod holders
Build radar mast with outriggers for ant
Build riser and rebuild exhaust design, Cummins turbos are to close to the waterline
Add lee outriggers and bases
Pull, straighten shaft and fix cutlass bearing housing, inner center ring is broken off
Replace shaft seal withPSS unit
Repack rudder post
Replace battery tray/box
Replace all water lines and fuel lines
Paint accent strip on cabin trunk and boot stripe with awlgrip
Remove bow rail and fill holes.
Remove stern platform and fill holes
R/R engine to clean up and paint bilge
This is a evolving list, not all of its done. Waiting on 50degree plus temps for the paintand glass work.
I'll get more pics soon

Coastal,
That's a really impressive list, and even more so that it's nearly complete already.
I'm especially interested in the new riser. Did you fabricate it yourself?

Nice post, I'm sold, when do you think you might be able to start on mine? Very impressive winter project list.

Good stuff. The riser is important. Post some pics when you get the hose from the Heat-X to the mixer in place, that's gonna be an "interesting" run. I noticed you cleaned up the paint/weld around the Heat-X elbow, do you plan on re-orientating it?

This is a evolving list, not all of its done. Waiting on 50degree plus temps for the paintand glass work. Lots of stuff started, lots still to go.
The elbow on the exchanger will be rotated 90 degrees, this will allow a piece of hose to connect to the mixer. It's just soldered in place.
Yes I'm doing all the work myself. Luckily this is my profession, although I don't physically do this stuff anymore I did for many years. Been working with marine metal since my teens, I'm about to turn 40.

Re: Winter projects/upgrades
Any chance you could knock up a drawing or sketch of the riser? I'd prefer my out of stainless rather than the standard OEM steel one. Since I own a machine shop and have fabricating facilities it's a job on the "to do" list at some point.

Re: Winter projects/upgrades
Well I could, but I'm sure the yanmars turbine housing is Not located in the same position.
If someone wants a riser I'd be willing to build a few. I would want to run the boat this summer for a few weeks and check the back pressure first to make sure what I sell is working correctly. This one is built from 316l stainless steel. The flange I cut off my old Cummins riser, I can get flanges. That will keep the down time to next to nothing.

Coastrunner: Great list. We all are impressed. What all are you doing to the risers? Should be like a new boat when you get done.

Re: Winter projects/upgrades
I should have clarified, anyone with a 6bta in a 28 I could jig what I have and duplicate it.
Whells, my main focus is to get the highest point of the exhaust system 12+ inchs above waterline. Without that safety factor the engine is likely to ingest water that could damage the turbo and beyond.

I had stainless risers built for my Yanmars by American Marine Exhaust near Seattle. The have probably made them for the 6bt. Nice quality. Great service. .

This post got me poking around and I found the item below. Looks like a good deal, but need to check the part number. Anybody able to do that easily?

Re: Winter projects/upgrades
Coastalrunner,
I have the same year boat with a Cummins also. I was just at the Seattle boat show looking for riser options as I am concerned about the turbo being close to waterline. When we bought the boat Cummins West said that the engine had ingested water previously. We have since pulled the motor and rebuilt but I do not want this to happen again.
Keep me posted on your progress and I would be interested if you made one for sale. We have the same layout and it would interesting to get both our boats "optimized".
