Looking at 27fc what to look for
Hi I am looking at a 1984 family cruiser with a Leham 4d61 engine in it. I am having it professionally surveyed. Just wondering what the weak points are and what I should look for. Thanks Chris hoping to join your group if all things work out

Check out the hull deck joint, and leaks around the ports in the cabin side and the windows in the pilot house.

Re: Looking at 27fc what to look for
Thanks for replying. The boat smacked a piling on the port side where the icebox is located and the deck hull joint is broken there. Do you know how the deck hull joint is held together? The survey is being done next week so I guess I will find more out next week I am just trying to get a handle on things. Just redid an Alberg 30 but it seems we are more a power boat couple. Have to get rid of a sailboat now.

Welcome, the surveyor is going to be your new best friend, try to be there with him. With a boat purchase I think of the rule of thirds. One third to buy, one third to repair, one third to fix the stuff you missed the first time thru. Hope it works out for you.

Sprig
Do a search for "barrier coat and rub rail" and look for the post by Bob Enzor -- he is the prior owner of my 27FC and I am the beneficiary of his great work as described in that post (at least on the rub rail among other things) but there still was rot in the pilot house (sorry Bob )

Its not easy to find parts for that 4d61 and is something to consider.

Re: Looking at 27fc what to look for
Thanks for all the suggestions. The boat has been under cover for five years so things should be pretty dry probably will be hard to find any wets spots. The motor has 610 hours all I can do is hope they did there maintenance can't sea trial it now but can run it. Basic parts are at rock auto pretty cheap as things go. The potential for cabin rot is what has me worried the interior is so nice hate to mess with it. Survey is tomorrow so hope I will find more out then. Thanks again

One thing forgot to ask. The hull is cored is it all the way down?
