28te 300hp Peninsular

Post by Pete »

What's the best cruising speed for the Penn? Next year I plan to cruise to Block and The Peconincs more,
First season , I rarely pushed her over 16kts, (too loud to talk (about fishing spots over that)

Hi Pete,
I usually cruise 16-17 knots. That's around 2700-2800 RPM for me.

I used to try and trim (made a difference) and cruise at about 18 on the run up to Block.

I really want to install a Floscan on my 28'TE with the Peninsular. That would tell me what's the best cruise for sure.

As long as you are not over-propped I think using the manufacturer's rpm fuel burn specs and your GPS SOG you can make a real good chart. The floscan is a bit involved and even then it's only as accurate as you make it..

I am very interested in moving from my 31' Rampage to a 28" Albin with the Penninsular. I'm wondering what kind of range you guys are getting at cruise? The boat will be used mostly for a family boat, inshore charters and some offshore trips thrown in. Seems like a great layout and maximum use of space for a 28' boat. Any feedback from owners would be great, Thanks.

with my 2002 28te yanmar power i'm getting 1.5 nmpg fully loaded for near offshore fishing trips. heavy with gear, ice, chum etc. holding only 135 gals that limits my confidence for going to the edge.

will most likely be using a 50 gallon bladder to extend my offshore range.

for cruising, traveling with lighter loads, @3200rpm my sweet spot, she can do nearly 2 mpg and 18-20k. i have learned not to trust my fuel gauge and figure my fuel consumption on miles traveled.

i imagine the penn should produce similar fuel burn.

curious as to why you're considering the albin over the rampage

Special K- I have always liked the pilothouse with a hard enclosure and the single engine option. I have the yanmar 300's in my boat now - great engines. I think I should find an Albin with the Yanmar. What RPM are you making 18-20 knots? The Rampage is good.....just time for a change. I'm actually in Ellington.
