28TE Winterizing the a/c

When winterizing the raw water system for my AC can I do it the same way as you would the main engine. That is close the seacock feeding the AC water pump, open the strainer, turn on the AC, and pour antifreeze into the strainer until it's coming out pink through the thru hull?

Yes. Mine is sometimes difficult to prime,, but you have the right method.

Usually no because AC pumps are not self-priming. I have to disconnect the hose at the strainer (between pump and strainer), raise above the pump height, insert a funnel into the hose and pour in PGAF with the pump running.

That was my experience also on a prior boat... with my Albin ,not needed. So whatever gets your pump to suck it through is the correct answer........ guess I spoke too soon.

On my 28 I just perform a reverse flush once she's on the hard. After giving the strainer a good cleaning, I close it up and make sure the sea cock is open. Then, using a drill pump fitting with one hose in a bucket of water and the other up against the outlet thru hull, I first run fresh water through the outlet thru hull. You'll eventually see the water streaming out of the intake seacock under the boat. Then I repeat with antifreeze. This avoids the need to cycle the system as well as any potential priming issues.

Mike, what type of drill pump do you have. There are plenty of them online with mixed reviews on all of them.

I picked up one from Sears for under 10 bucks. Just attach to a drill and you're good to go. Home Depot also sells them.
