The VW Pathfinder was/is a very reliable engine and would power a 27 well. If you're in a hurry, you have the wrong vessel!

I have the Nissan in my 87' SC, I assume its the original. I've been thinking about a repower so when its time I know which engine I want to go with. The 100hp range is sounding right. I've heard of the Yanmar and Westerbeke in that range. Any other makes? I was wondering about a 4cyl Cummins or Kubota, any thoughts?

When the time comes, you might want to think about a rebuild of your Nissan - Much more cost effective
I'm in the process of a repower with a 100 HP Yanmar 4JH3-HTE and I can tell you it's a VERY expensive process, even if you can do 100% of the work yourself
I bought my engine newly rebuilt direct from a Yanmar distributor and it included a new transmission and a new instrument panel. The engine was $10K and by the time I'm done, the complete conversion will likely run me close to $15K . . . . and this was using a rebuilt $10K engine. A brand new 4JH4 (the current version of my 4JH3) would have been at least double that price
I paid $15K for my boat ten years ago and am now investing another $15K in it plus a few hundred hours of labor and in the end I'll probably have a boat I could realistically expect to sell for . . . . about $22.5K
Is a Nissan rebuild looking any better to you?

I definitely understand what your saying but how long will Nissan parts be around? Right now there are parts I can't get fortunately they were gaskets or parts I wasn't ordering as I'm seeing "no longer available" a lot as I have looked for parts. Granted this is a new boat for me(learning curve) and I had my first breakdown in the boat which I'm fixing at this time. I guess I'm a little discouraged about the availability of parts. Hopefully when the boat is up and running I will get some confidence back. I appreciate your input because this is what I am looking for.

Ebay is also a great source of NOS parts. By looking for Peugeot Diesel parts vs "Lehman" I have found nozzles, water pumps, alternator brushes etc etc, generally at really bargain prices. I have built a good set of spares for my engine so I dont worry quite as much about a breakdown as I used to.........

I did try rockauto but I used an 83' maxima and didn't have any luck. I'll give them an other try. The engine did run fine before the IP belt slipped. So I do know about the belt maintenance now. There is an ld28 forum that has been really helpful. Thanks for the advice. Stocking up on some spare parts are also in order. I do have an extra belt and pulley tensioner now.

When looking for engine parts for a boat, many times the year sold or boats model year is'nt the year the engine was made. Marinizsed car engines can sit around for some time (years) before they go into a new boat. Look for an older year car but with the same engine specs when searching parts

Volvo Penta TAMD31P
Our '85 Express was repowered with a Volvo-Penta TAMD31P (diesel) prior to our acquiring it this January with 723 hours. It's turbo charged 4 cylinder and rated at 130 HP - though I've seen the same engine listed as slightly lower and higher. I can get a solid 13 knots, but that's not really very realistic or fun - it's darn noisy and uncomfortable if there is much of a sea running. We have settled into a comfortable 7-7.5 knot range that does us well and 10 if I'm in a hurry - starts getting noisy though.
We've put a little over 60 hours on the engine since January. I can't give an accurate fuel burn at any specific speed as I usually vary it depending on the conditions, etc. I estimate 1.5 gph fuel burn and have been pleasantly surprised to be a few tenths of a gallon below that when refueling.

FYI Volvo used the same Peugeot base engine for a number of years for one of their engines..... Can't remember model. The base engine is very solid it the part
S around it that need maintaining.

My 27 has the 100 Westerbeke. I have no trouble getting filters and it starts and runs like a gem. I cruise at 6.5-7.5 at between 1800 and 2000 rpm. I can go up to 9 knots when not bucking the tide but at 2500 the engine is much noiser. At 1800 we can cruise a a nice quite smooth ride. I like having the extra horsepower for bucking tide or seas. This engine transmits little vibration at cruising speed. The bulk of the engine does take lots of room.stagalv wrote:How about the 100 Westerbeke? I see that some 27s have this engine?

I have a 100 Westerbeke in mine. Runs really smooth and quite. But it is a 6-cyl, only putting out 103HP, so it better run smooth. Probbaly way they last so long, they never get worked hard. I need to test the tachometer to see how accuarate it is, but I am guess at 1700rpm, and 7-kts, is its sweet spot. The fuel burn is about 0.7-gallons/hour at that speed. By some rough calculations, it is only using about 40HP at that speed.
Anything over that and it just plows water. I think it would take about another 20-HP to get it to start planning.
The downfall, it weights 750lbs, and is the same size as a yanmar 6-cyl, that delivers 230HP. So, it takes up a lot of the engine compartment, and weights a lot, for that relaibility. I have to pull the engine, to even get the waste and water tanks out.
Hourmeter was not working when I got the boat, but I am guessing there is about 2500 hours on the engine.
