Oil. Volvo diesel

I am here in Beaufort nc while boating yesterday my oil pressure drop .... Turned off engine opened engine cover and oil was all over the engine.... What a mess,was towed into the docks .. Dip stick registered no oil, I put more oil in checked the dip stick .. Started the engine and could not see where the oil was sprucing from ... Shut off engine and was towed back ...
I did notice that the dip stick was partially out ,,, could that has caused the oil to shoot out ?? Any other thoughts of where to look for the cause
I have a 1994 albin 28. Volvo diesel 6.cyl 125 hp Am sitting at dock now waiting for diesel mechanic to call ... Thank you!!!!!

It will be the O ring on the dipstick - they get torn over time and should really be a service item.

Yep you are right .... The very tiny o ring was not on the dip stick
So tomorrow go check your dip sticks and make sure that o ring is there

Make sure the one thats been replaced is a Viton o ring - it will either be green or red. Black will be a standard o ring and will eventually fail as the oil and heat breaks it down.

Afraid I don't and i no longer have my manuals here anymore since selling them with the previous boat.

If I recall, its about 1/4" inside diameter and 3/8" outside diameter.
