I've been watching an 1997 Albin 35TE down at Prestige Yacht Sales. It's had a reconditioned engine installed recently (water in the cylinders), and a lot of other new stuff with the engine, electronics, and cosmetics. Seems to me I read about a 35 TE that sunk two years ago. Is this that boat? This boat has been for sale for well over a year. On paper, and in photos it looks pretty good.

I don't know details about the 35 you are talking about except the isitng on Yachtworld. I've had a 1998 35TE for over a year now and love it. It's certainly a head turner at the marina! Spacious, comfortable ride, etc. Get a good surveyor to check her out completely and you should be OK. Drop me a line of you'd like the name of my guy, I was very pleased with him. I also had a mechanic from Cummins check out both engines, money well spent. Any questions, let me know. The price for the boat you are exploring seems low. I've had a couple of inquiries to sell mine for quite a bit above what I paid. Good luck.

Who are you dealing with at Prestige? I bought an 03 28TE from them in January and hope to finish the transaction in the next week or so.

I recall seeing pictures of an Albin that had sunk in shallow water a while back. They had driled cores of the hull to test for water intrustion and had removed the engines. I do not recall if this was a 35' model or not.
I would certainly be cautious since there is a distinct posibility that this is the same boat. I can't think of any other scenario that would result in water in the cylinders.
However, if the boat has been thoroughly gone through, I wouldn't immediately disqualify it. I would want all the electrical gone over with a fine toothed comb. Find out what's new, what's original, and ensure that everything works properly, and was replaced right. I would look for potential water damage or intrusion that may not have been caught. I would want full details on the condition of the engine, including a compression check, and list of parts replaced (right down to each part number). Even with all that, I would expect the boat to sell for a reduced price as compared to one that had not sunk.
As I recall, the one I saw had only sunk up to about the floorboards. Basically, a hose had broken and the boat had sunk in it's shallow mooring.

I found the guys at Prestige to be pretty straight up. Did you ask them point blank if the boat has ever sunk and if thats the one you saw pictures of? I believe they will answer you honestly. They work pretty closely with the Albin USA head office there in Cos Cob. It might have been reconditioned there......I believe you can get water in the cylinders through the exhaust with if the wrong series of events occurs.....has to do with over cranking?

Water in cylinders
I don't know for sure, but I think that in some cases a blown head gasket can result in water in the cylinders. Is this true?

Re: Water in cylinders
It can, but not usually to the degree that it would cause hydrolock and destroy the engine.Double Lucky wrote:I don't know for sure, but I think that in some cases a blown head gasket can result in water in the cylinders. Is this true?
