strange sounds in the night
We have noises like a quiet woodpecker in the rear cabin at night. Bursts of 3 seconds or so, not from a single source, but around the cabin. My thought is bugs. Don't know how they would live in there. Anyone experience this problem, either on board or home?

Re: strange sounds in the night
If so what you are hearing are juvenile blackfish. They live in the shallow anchorage area near dinghy beach.

Re: strange sounds in the night
Exactly our location. Haven't heard it at our slip and no while moored in Newport. I put my ear to every part of the boat inside and out but could only hear it near the stern and inside the cabin. We'll move out to the north mud to see if that helps. So thankful for the information, Jay. Wish me luck, Admiral is ready to sell.

Hope we're talking about the same sound...These are loud enough to keep us awake.

Re: strange sounds in the night
Reminds me of the krill (brine shrimp) from NC. I recall ex-Albineer RicM's account on more than one of his RI/FL runs.
Mike, how deep a water you anchored in?

Re: strange sounds in the night
When we boat camp during spring break here in Texas we hear the big black drum during the night. The first time it sounded like people whispering. Creepy... We also hear the dolphins chattering. The hull of our A25 is like the cone of a speaker.

Re: strange sounds in the night
We are in 5ft of water at low tide. The noise starts about an hour after sunset and goes until dawn. Some are faint, like summer cicadas, a few can sound like it's inside the boat. We're going to move to another spot today and see what happens.

Re: strange sounds in the night
Gotcha, I've never anchored in that tight, usually further north off the point. Did the other boats around you notice the same or do you just have some yummy bottom paint?

Re: strange sounds in the night
Rob it's the same noise we hear there same times of day. We laugh at them sometimes because they are so vocal
Sometimes I go out on deck middle of the night and can hear them outside. A RI dep guy told us what they were. They are much more active now than I remember from a few years ago, guess that means they like the clean water.

Oh I'm sure, wasn't questioning your info, you've got WAY more time on the hook at Block than I do or probably ever will......but then again while I was still in diapers you were captaining your own boat!jleonard wrote:Rob it's the same noise we hear there same times of day..

Re: strange sounds in the night
Hi All,
We (and other friends) have heard the "snapping/popping sounds in the same anchorage area at the same times of night. We assumed they were squid - someone else told us that too. Never considered fish! We too enjoy hearing them. Hope to get to BI for the first time this summer at the end of next week - IF "Bertha" doesn't show up this way.
