Help with engine start

Post by Sunsetrider »

Albin 25 with the MD17C motor: admittedly I upgraded the battery room cabling myself - including the addition of an ACR - and have currently left the house wiring an unconnected mess, but still ---> last Saturday was first chance this summer to use the Manatee - turned the key and instant start! Engine instruments not working but I have to figure out how to fix that.

Today I went down to the Marina - the marina and slip owned by the marine op that hauled the boat and was to address some of the more serious electrical shortcoming like nave and anchor lights. He had done nothing all week, so I was determined to move the boat to my own marina up river.

Switch the battery on/off switch to On, make sure the Stop Engine thing is firmly down, Turn the key - absolutely nothing! No clicking, no needle movement. Those cabin circuits which are connected - work just fine - cabin lights etc.

Start battery reads 12.48V and a jump does not help. What am I missing? Ideas? It's the end of July and I am getting kind of depressed about delays in getting underway. :(

Yes, I did try it with the disengage button in and out but I am going back today to try moving/jiggling the lever around with the key turned to start. Hope it's that simple. I want to get it to home port and find a reliable technician for the electrical work.

Try jumping the solenoid switch, I had this problem on my 27FC, turns out the wiring from the ignition switch to the solenoid was bad, I had a sometimes it started sometimes it didn't situation, jumping got the engine running but I had to have the switch/connections rewired to eliminate the problem. Also check your ground connections are they clean and tight?

I recently replaced all the old ground connection buses and connectors with nice clean heat shrink so I think they should be good. I will pull off the damn heavy engine cover and check the solenoid connections if the gear tweaking doesn't do the trick.

Started right up today, no prob. So that sounds like the same solenoid issue. I will pursue that angle but in the meantime - biy was I pleased! :D
