Based upon the advice received here and elsewhere I have decided to not push my luck any further and replace my pair of ten-year-old dual purpose 4Ds (specked at 850 cranking and ? amp hours). I find that similar 4Ds are not readily available in the local market, but can be ordered in at $300 each. Readily available local options include marine dual purpose KIRKWOOD 27DCs at COSTCO (845 cranking, 120 amp hours) at $106. and marine dual purpose NAUTILAS type 31 (900 cranking, 115 amp hours) at CANADIAN TIRE at $155.
As I do not overnight without shore power, my main concern is reliable starting for my Yanmar 6LP.
Any advice on the above choices or something else?

Interstate SRM-4D's have served me very well and are priced right.

Costco 27's are working well for us. One for starting, two for house bank. But I don't know what your Yanmar needs for starting.

I'm using a Deca 4D and it is a real heavy plate battery for the money. I would recommend.

It's worth taking a little time and doing some research. If you read the post below it may give you some ideas, even if you don't cruise right now. It's worked really good for us, so if you can find a source like we did, it will pay off big time.

Re: BATTERY REPLACEMENT CHOICES?
Folks,
I had three 8D lead acid batteries replaced with four 4D absorbent glass batteries and gained 150 Amp hours. The lead acid gene set battery was replaced with an absorbent glass battery as well.
The absorbent glass batteries require no maintenance so we were able to install starboard housings around them creating significant shelving storage areas above them in the engine compartment of our Express Trawler. The Lifeline absorbent glass mat batteries are not inexpensive but have a superior warranty. Thus far we have been very pleased.

Re: BATTERY REPLACEMENT CHOICES?
There should be some opening near the top of the enclosure for ventilation; those batteries can release hydrogen if over charged. Always nice to have more storage and flexibility of installation although at a price. Thanks for the tip.

Re: BATTERY REPLACEMENT CHOICES?
Thanks Mike,
Excellent point. The installer did leave 3 plus inches of clearance, a roof vent and the enclosure has only three walls therefore open on one end.
