Slide shaft out and back in

I need to replace the rear seal on my trans and I want to do it while in the water. I need to know if I slide the prop shaft back to give me room to work will I be able to get it pulled back in? The shaft is 9' long and is supported by cutless bearings at each end. 1983 albin 36'. Has anyone done this?

The short answer is yes. We actually did it by mistake about 3 years ago. In the classic 36 forum search on "the shaft fell out" to get the story.
The shaft had moved back about a foot. My mechanic came down to the boat, slid the shaft back into place and away we went. When I see him next I'll find out what he used to slide it back into place. I remember that moving it by hand wasn't an option

I did get a diver to pull it back the last few inches. Just enough room to get the 1 11/16 socket on the trans output shaft.
