Fresh Water Cooling kit for a Volvo MD17C

Post by Robbas »

Hi folks,

My first post here - hoping I can get some help with this.
I just bought a used MD17C that had FWC its entire life.
The FWC was sold before the engine was. So now I may need to find another one.
I'm replacing the MD11C I have in my boat now. It's also FWC but I figure the MD17 will need more volume(??)
Someone told me to try San Juan Engineering. So far I don't see an application listed from them.

Any ideas? Can I just build my own?

If it were me, i would start with what i had. You have a FW heat exchanger from you md11. hook it up and see if it will cool it. I kinda doubt it will but i may depending on how hard you push the engine.

If it doesn't cool it i would find a local marine used parts store (or internet?) and find a heat exchanger from an engine as big or bigger than your 17. It would be fairly easy to adapt it to work. It connects with hoses and adapters which are cheap and not a specialty part. as for mounting it in the engine bay...you could either make a mounting bracket to attach it to the engine or mount it to the bulkhead.

I am not sure about building one from scratch. Personally, i don't have the skills or equipment to tackle that, sounds like a fairly complicated build but if you are good at brazing...it could be an option.

Likely San Juan will try to sell you a custom made, one off, part. Which will be very easy to install and will work great. the down side is you may end up spending as much on it as you did the entire engine. there are two code words for draining your wallet. 1) CUSTOM 2)Marine.
