bow thruster shear pin

Post by kirley »

I have a 1999 albin 31 bow thruster that ate the port bow line, and sheared the pin, does any one know where the pin is located, stock thruster from albin. Do I have to remove the boat from the water to replace it, or is it inside the boat above the motor in the v berth? Thanks for the help!

Do you have the Vetus? On both our 28 (prior boat) and 35 the drive pin is behind the prop. If the water's warm you can do the job in the water! :)

Note, if it is a Vetus they have an excellent web site. Exploded diagrams and part lists for all of their current models are available.

There is also another pin you can access from inside the boat - its about 1" long and 1/8" diameter (the one on the prop is about 3/16" if I recall. The top pin is made from brass and I would have thought would be the first one to break as the lower pin is Aluminium Bronze. I have the Sidepower thruster but my buddy has the vetus unit and had to replace his top pin a few months ago.

The one Tree is referring to is the actual shear pin. Vetus refers to it as the "Safety" pin.

The shear pin on our 28 is on the INSIDE.
Remove two Phillips head screws on the top of the mother housing. ( they are about 8-9" long)
Carefully lift straight up and remove motor and housing. The shear pin should be in pieces.
Replace and re-fit.
Jamestown Distributors was the only source I could find for the pins.
Vetus manual walked me through the replacement easily and clearly.

If you have problems sourcing the pins, I have a bag of them on the boat that we made hoping that they'd be the same as the sidepower ones.

I'll quite happily send a few over to you.

Well I guess I'd better order a "shear" pin as all I have is a spare "drive" pin and now that I finally looked through enough of the parts list to see that I do indeed have both types...I'm sure to need one. They don't make it obvious.

Pretty much nothing is "stock" when it comes to Albin. It's probably a Vetus, but the factory could have gone with something else or the original owner could have spec'd a different brand. Best would be to open the hatch and take a look.
