Due to some bad transmission sounds, I replaced the transmission on my 27 FC this past summer. The new transmission is quiet and smooth. The old transmission is probably destined for its scrap metal value, but out of curiosity I wanted to explore what went wrong and the possibility of rebuilding it. Upon disassembling it, a gear on the input shaft is pretty chewed up, with damage to the corresponding gear on the output shaft. Does anyone have any experience with rebuilding these, or perhaps an old HBW 250 transmission intended for scrap?

You can probably find a manual on line, maybe try ebay. Marine trannys aren't all that bad. I rebuilt my Borg Warner myself without ever having looked inside before. It's only just a bunch of gears and things. Just keep things in order when you take them apart so they go back to gether right.

That input shaft is going to be expensive. I don't know your ratio but the input shaft for a 1.88:1 is $ 837.00.
