Post by peterf »

I am thinking about adding an autopilot on my 28te. Can anyone recommend the pump size I should order.

Hi Peter,

Check the steering cylinder on your boat. There should be a model number on it and you can cross reference that to the proper sized pump.

Yes, you'll be able to get the cubic inch capacity of the cylinder from the manufacturer, and that will determine the autopilot pump size.

Dragging this one back into life, Peter did you ever install the autopilot?

I'm just about to install mine and if you have any hints or tips that would be great - more so its the hydraulics side I could do with some help with, were you able to cut pipework easy enough and fit compression fittings for the T pieces and check valves etc?

cheers

I hope to install the Raymarine EV200 on my '97 28TE zthis spring. It's not been out a long time, but I've spoken to installers, and it gets excellent reviews.

I don't believe the Ray EV includes rudder position feedback but I would look into that further to be sure. It might be an accessory add-on. I find the rudder indicator display on the display head to be invaluable when docking / maneuvering. I also like to watch the rudder position and movement when the AP is engaged so I know what the AP is doing at all times.

Just did a quick search and it appears to be at the top of this display so it appears to be an available option...

The Raymarine auto pilot control unit depicted by Rob was installed this past summer on my Osprey fishing boat. It works great now. We tried to install without the rudder indicator and that was unsuccesful. There is a newer version that has the rudder indicator built in but not on the unit we installed.

It was installed with a Volvo Penta outdrive unit. It could not find "ID" the location of the rudder until the rudder indicator was installed. Seems to me it would have to be installed at the post for the rudder on an inboard. Several years ago we did install such a unit on my former Luhrs IB and it had to be at located at the rudder post to feed information to the auto pilot as well.

I can provide the actual model pump if still needed when next home in about 10 days.

I am installing a second hand unit - its a raymarine St6000+ and i will be using the type one pump from raymarine to run it - it has the S3G computer so despite being a few years old, it is bomb proof.

I am just looking for hints and tips to installing an autopilot to a boat that wasn't fitted with one from the factory - questions like "Do I need to install check Valves or are they built into the pump?" "what happens if i don't install the check valve?"

If anyone has installed an autopilot to a 28TE, is there anything I need to look out for?

Tree, how did the type 1 pump work out?
I'm wondering if type 1 is OK for engine box and if the flush deck is as well.

Update: I installed the type 1 in an engine box model. No problems.

I shall let you know tomorrow as we splash in the morning and it will be the first time it'll be used. Just as a tip to save money, the pumps are made by a company here in the UK called Hypro. Buying direct is less than half the price of buying from Raymarine.
