looks like my hot water heater replacement installation is gonna take the shop 25 hours according to their estimate.

I didn't add up the hours but I did the job myself & I'm guessing I must have spent the better part of 20 hours replacing my waterheater.

It seems like almost half of that time was spent going backwards & forwards to the plumbing store getting fittings & finding out that I didn't get what I needed or could could not find what was needed so another way had to be found

Engine hoses to & from the water heater had to be replaced which meant that the coolant had to be changed. Thats OK. It was overdue for a flushing & change anyway but that added a few hours to the overall job.

Just gotta love boats

well, i guess the main reason to replace it was to maintain resale value. i think you can only let so many things go before a boat looses buyer appeal. i don't think hot water is all that big a deal and i suppose i could have just removed the old unit which was corroded badly, but with my recent engine change and accompanying new hoses, etc., i would think even though its a '93, it might still be reasonably marketable, not that i want to sell it anytime soon.
what's that about a hole in the water into which money is poured?

It seems like you can expect 10 years of low maintenance the things like water heaters start to go which leads to something else & leads to something else.

My mechanic was on the boat this morning. I have a rare one. He works sundays sometimes. Actually his boat is stored right next to mine, on MY property & at a very reasonable storage fee.

Anyway we were going over my 32. Nothing too very serious this year but I am looking at an engine removal in a couple years for a good going over for hose & gasket replacement plus anything else that may be found & a repainting before reinstallation.

While the engine is out the engine comartment will be repainted & possibly reduce the size of the fuel tanks to give much more working space around the engine. I don't need anything near the 300 mile range that the boat has now carrying 260 gal of diesel. I'd be happy with half of that.

Big bill to do for sure but we have no plans to sell in the next 10 years.

right. it would have been much easier/cheaper if the water heater replacement was done last winter ('05-'06) when the engine was replaced. oh well. i just count my blessings and am thankful that i am in a position to have a boat.

Hey Tomcat,
Did you look into the "HOT WATER ON DEMEND" units? Mounts on a bulkhead, no tank. WM has 'em.

Did a water heater about 3 years ago on my 34, and it took about an hour, even with the engine loop. My marina mates were damn impressed. I just felt lucky.
