How is your A27 powered

Post by eseyoung »

I have a Nissan in mine. Seems to be the odd ball/least desirable of the bunch but she seems strong, has good compression, and not real high hours. Only bad thing is she is a hard starter. i plan on doing her glow plugs and sending injectors out for cleaning/rebuild.

I do have complete service manuals books for her if anyone wants perhaps i can digitize and place in the file library

When most people think of 'Lehman' they probably think of Ford Lehman - A pretty good 120 HP 6 cylinder Lehman marinized Ford marine diesel. Unfortunately, none of those were ever installed in A 27's

Personally, I would much rather have the Nissan than the 4 cylinder Peugeot/Lehman my 27 came with

I'm currently in the process of installing a 100 hp turbo/intercooled Yanmar in mine

A lot of French Taxi drivers would disagree. Unfortunately Peugeot pulled out of the US market about the time Lehman marinized them. As you have pointed out in previous posts parts still exist if you search for automobile (not boat) parts. So far, after four years, the motor has been totally reliable for me and the 3 quarts it burns an hour is a delight (even at 6kts)......Were I to chose my power I'd likely want different but I have been very happy with my lehman thus far.

C'mon, Don from Mystic -

I can't be the only one who voted for Lehman! Us 4D61'ers have to stick together!

I know Lehman was the first (I'm pretty sure) but wondering what year they started offering the other engines. Mine's a 1984 (and still runs like a top!).

Our 27 FC is an early '85 (hull #275) and has the Nissan.

The Nissans do have a weak link in the cast iron exhaust elbow on top of the intake/exhaust manifold. The hot salt water breaks the elbow down and then dumps water into the top of the engine. We replaced our factory elbow with an aftermarket bronze unit and I'd encourage other Nissan owners to consider replacing their original cast iron elbows. It is way less expensive than an engine replacement.

Jim, you got a pic of the elbow in question? I Don't know quite what you are saying. i have flexible exhaust hose that connects directly to the manifold on the aft of the motor. the hose goes into a fiberglass elbow, an another section of hose then into the muffler. perhaps mine was already replaced?

These posts on the Nissan are good. I have a Nissan in mine. Here are some of its characteristics.

- Not a hard starter but runs somewhat rough after initial start (maybe 15 sec or so). I've replaced glow plugs and had injectors overhauled. I've been told it is just a characteristic of this engine. After starting it runs strong.

- We had overheating due to corrosion in the manifold riser. Cleaned it out and replaced it as it seemed structurally ok, but Jim's comment is correct that if these fail water goes into the engine. Jim, do you have a link to the bronze riser?

- Another weak link with the Nissan is the damper plate. Mine had failed and it is almost impossible to find a replacement. The splined hub actually sticks out a bit to accept the transmission shaft, but even then there is only about 1/2 inch of the shaft inside the hub. Most replacement plates are flat and wouldn't work, even if they would fit otherwise. Anyone with specifics on replacements please post.

Jeez, I had to read this three times before I realized you were referring to fuel oil, not motor oil. I need a beer, TGIF!
(My Yanmar is efficient but not enough so that I ever used the word "quart" when talking fuel burn  )

The owner of our local lobster pound/fuel dock generally yells "you gonna buy fuel this year????" to me this time of year when I cruise by. I DID however have a '60 Chev as a kid, that probably did use 3qts/hr. We dubbed her "ole smokey"....

We have a Ford-Lehman (Peugeot) 4d61 in our 1984 Albin27FC. Found this interesting video on Indenor engines, which apparently is Peugot Diesel, and in Europe, they have a faithful following. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqlte074LYE

Good morning,

I too have a Nissan and love it. I've had the boat two years (1987 - 27FC) and my boat yard mechanic says that it's one of the best running and sounding engines he has ever worked on.

I have experienced any roughness after starting, it has always started and run strong for me. Would like to see pictures of the exhaust elbow being discussed and perhaps a link to pick one up.

Looking forward to an early spring.

Regards,
John

I have the 1984 SD61 Lehman/Peugeot with an unknown high number of hours, est 4000 to 5000 hrs put on by previous owners. Very efficient on fuel for the fifty hours I have put on her. Any info on where to get a new valve cover gasket and an oil presure sensor that I need now?

Also, if you are an ebayer, there are parts for this motor listed there as well. It's a great little motor!
