Listing

Post by Larry1942 »

Finally my new old Albin 27 family is sitting in my wet slip at the Boca Ciega yacht Club in gulfport, Florida. The question asked by three observers was , Why is your boat listing to port? It's no biggy at this time, but if other 27 owners have a clue, I'd appreciate a little guidance. Thanks larry71

My 27AC doesn't list (although my 25 Carver Express did, but that's another story).

I would look into weight on the port side factors:

Full water tank? 40 gallons weighs a lot!
Galley drawers and cabinets stuffed?
Larger or extra batteries?
Cockpit and pilothouse lockers? Are the port side lockers the "go to" for all your gear (funny, but mine seem to be).

Also don't discount the hidden spaces such as the compartments under the V berth and aft cabin bunk cushions. You might find a spare anchor or two in there. The fuel tank is on the centerline so fuel load is not a factor.

Speaking of the Carver, it listed to port with an empty water tank. I would fill the tank half-way just to look normal at the dock and to keep the "listing" comments from my neighbors to a minimum.

No, I don't suggest doing this with the holding tank!

Thanks Bunkie. I will keep your checkpoints in mind once she is back in the watert. I'm on the hard now at Salt Creek getting a bottom job, cutlass bearing, repacking the stuffing box, checking out existing thru hulls. I'm going the limit to really learn every aspect of this boat as I expect it to be my last after six sailboats. Renamed: "Knot So Fast", I don't have the sails to resort to should the engine deside to provide me with the challenge of the day. I have a new Garmin 740s coming that with the proper antennas and transducer should really spoil me. This Albin is a 1984 model that hasn't seen a survey since 1998 or it seems a new guage since about the same time so it should keep me busy in so many ways.

I have four batteries and a forty gallon water tank on the port and when the water is full my 27 leans a bit.
