How do you remove oil filter "cleanly"?

OK, we're approaching that time of year.
I'll take ANY advice on changing the Yanmar 6LP oil filter without make a mess.
A VERY POOR DESIGN in my opinion.

If you like to run the engine to warm the oil you can just do the oil change and not the filter and then do the filter another day when it's had time to drain down as much as possible. The last two years for my haul out oil change I just did the oil and then spun on a new filter prior to Spring launch.

Taking the time to strategically stuff oil absorbent fabric in all the areas under the filter and then having a small plastic CVS type bag at the ready for the dripping filter should allow this to be done without anything in the bilge. The prep with the oil sorb fabric takes longer than the filter swap but it's easier than cleaning up an oily mess. The 2 oil cooler lines right under the filter make a nice shelf for the fabric.

I was only thinking this the other day - I suppose it could be worse, the Volvo AD41d is mounted horizontally and the only way is to puncture it and drain into a bucket!

I, for one, do not subscribe to the "change the oil after engine is warm" crowd. Allowing the filter to drain back overnight empties it and results in a nice clean job. Waiting for spring...you just added the old oil from the filter into next years new oil.

What method are you using to remove the "cold" oil?
I'm not so sure my pump could pick it up.

I've got the Jabsco oil drain system. Five gallon bucket with the 12 volt pump mounted on top. It takes about 1-2 minutes to empty the pan of 11 or so quarts through the dipstick tube.

How do you figure? Do you drain the oil cooler when you change the oil & filter?

I'm thinking like this: Warm engine.....drain oil from oil pan, replace filter, oil leaves the filter into whatever method you use for catching it, fill with new oil. Cold engine......drain oil from pan, replace filter, oil from filter already drained into pan, fill with new oil. Wait 'til spring: drain oil from pan, fill with new oil, change filter in spring, oil drained from filter into new oil while waiting for spring. No I don't drain the oil cooler.

One reason I miss my Cummins...you can change the filter without spilling a drop because someone was smart enough not only to mount the filter with the open side up, but also leave access to it. PLUS the oil cooler is bolted to the block and uses the antifreeze system, so there is no additional cooler to drain (or not drain).

Agree about the relative ease of oil filter changing on the Cummins. I sure wish the same engineer(s) would have designed the location of the impeller!

I must be simple....I punch a hole in the top of the 6LP filter and let it drain down before removal on a warm engine. Wrap absorbent diapers around the base of the filter and then remove the filter.

Seems to work...
