Hynautic Steering System

Post by papafu »

We just blew a seal from our lower helm unit and are sitting in Annapolis. Our vessels is a 1981 Classic 36. A repair tech came over to do a fix but needed more info on the unit. Does anyone know what units Hynautic used in the 1981s. I have the manual but there is no mention of models or replacement parts. Can anyone assist with info? Thanks.

Mine is a Hynautic "capilano" (1983). It has the knob on the bottom of the pump that adjusts the stroke.
I have a seal kit onboard and my marina ordered it with the above information.

I have a file on my computer showing step by step repair of a model 275. It looks exactly like mine.
If you reply with your e mail address I can send the file, it 2.5 mb in size

Both of my Hynautics (installed in 1989) have been rebuilt by a company down in Florida. I don't have the info with me as it is on the boat. Fast guaranteed service and all in all the price was not bad. Worth checking out.

I believe that file is in the Document Library as well.

When you refill you can get Teleflex hydraulic fluid from West for $28/qt or go to an airport and get H-5606 for $9/qt.

You can also use Dextron type A tranny fluid.

I finally (after a 30 mile tow) was able to easily remove the lower helm pump and stamped on it was the part # H 21. It's the pre 1983 model and the seal rebuild kit is KS-04. It's now being rebuilt. The system will be refilled with Dextron Type A transmission fluid. Thanks for your input.
