Smart Chart AIS App

Post by crowra »

Another new Android app that looks very promising! And it's free!

SmartChart AIS from Technology Systems, Inc. http://www.smartchartais.com provides an AIS-over-cellular connectivity capability. What's cool is the augmented reality. SmartChart AIS is the first boating product that implements this type of situational display for boating. It requires a back-facing camera on a phone or tablet (which most Android devices have). You basically hold up the device and the camera view is displayed on the screen. But because it knows your GPS position and orientation/compass heading, it can superimpose the data surrounding your area on top of the camera image. So as you move around, buoy symbols will pop up on the display over the location where they should actually be located. Just hold up your phone, spin around and see the marinas, bridges, anchorages, fuel prices and more in your view.

Here are the major capabilities:

- US NOAA nautical charts with street maps outside the US
- Weather
- Augmented reality
- Forums and other social media
- Offline cruising guidance
- And more

Note: This is a version 1.0 app so there will be hiccups, bugs, etc.

This I like, A lot!

It's very much like the apps that you can use when you're looking to move house.

This really knocks marine traffic and ship info out of the water!

I shall keep an eye on app store for when this comes out on iPhone

Ironically, that report is based on my waters - we have some of the busiest shipping in the world here and in fog Radar is a must, AIS has made it so much easier to navigate - especially when you have a chart plotter with radar and AIS overlay like the raymarine C90W.

The picture to the yacht collision was shown as video on local news, sadly too many "yachties" over here have no understanding of navigation.

I tried SmartChart AIS this weekend when we cruised to Oxford. I don't know if it's my phone or the app but it crashed just about every time I used it. When it did work, I was pretty impressed with the "Augmented Reality". It still needs some work but is a keeper and handy to have. You will also need an Active Captain account ("Trip Advisor" for boaters) to take advantage of the cruising guidance.

For course and speed of merchant vessels, we use the Marine Traffic app from marinetraffic.com
