Re: Where is the gensets located on the 28 TEs?
Hi Guys, Thanks for all the replies. I think the space between the helm seats under the floor has been bastardized, see picture. Where are the batteries normally kept? If you don't have an inverter how many batteries does the basic boat carry and what size? I think the wiring has been screwed up ? Is the sea water filter and the engines exhaust normal located as in my picture? I have to scrape myself up to get in down in there! Comments?

Fred,
Our center bilge is pretty much empty. The raw water strainer and seacock are toward the back, further aft than yours.
Beneath the helm seat, the hot water heater, holding tank, and bilge pump sit on a platform. The platform steps down on the inboard edge to a narrow platform attached to the stringer. We have three Group 27 batteries (2 house, 1 starting) on that platform. I can post photos if you want.
We like having a mostly empty center bilge. The access to the equipment is easier (?!) that way.

Re: Where is the gensets located on the 28 TEs?
Hey Fred,
I'm assuming that's your A/C strainer. And I'm kind of doubting that's an engine exhaust...but honestly you have me at a loss as to what I'm looking at in this picture.
On our 28 there was a big 8D sitting there, with the 2 group 27's to Starboard. Our inverter was under the quarter berth, just visible from under the opening step (where our batt. switches were) in the companionway.
Obviously if you go the generator route then there's not much need for a big house bank. So that's the first thing you need to decide.

What is that, looks like exhaust hose? Fresh air ducting for the engine compartment?

Re: Where is the gensets located on the 28 TEs?
Ok, the large hose is the exhaust hose for the 315 Yanmar. After it exits the engine on the port side it crosses over the opening to a water lift muffler which just out of view on the stbd side. The raw water filter you see is the main engine raw water supply. This boat is a 93 with a 2008 Yanmar. Both of these items plus the 8d battery makes this space quite difficult to work in. Anybody know the original location of the batteries? I think my 1st project will be to relo the items in this space to be able to add a genset. Thanks again for everyone comments.RobS wrote:What is that, looks like exhaust hose? Fresh air ducting for the engine compartment?

Re: Where is the gensets located on the 28 TEs?
Ahhhh! Now I get it! Your boat was re-powered but they reused the exhaust from "The Beast" that exits to starboard. Most Yanmars exit to port.
You should have a large thru-hull all the way aft near the rudder that was the original engine raw water source. Why they would create a new one and have to deal with another hole in the boat is strange, but I'm sure they (whoever "they" are) had a good reason...
My 8-D was located near where yours is, and then the group 27s (2) were to starboard on a small platform just outboard of the stringer.
Since you're thinking of going the generator route you could likely get away with a 4D for engine start and a single group 27 for minor house loads when not running the generator. I'd wire the generator to start from the 27 with an emergency cross connect to the 4D in case you run the house down and can't start the generator.
