Ah, now it all makes sense. Thanks for posting that. Much different than the fiberglass removeable "L" panel installed at the factory. That certainly gives added access but I can see how the water heater is a PITA.. Looks like a quality hatch and a good install job.

without the hatch how could you even do the Y valve for the holding tank .... not to mention the hot water tank !!!

The photo sure does help understanding what you were up against. Way to persevere and find a hot water tank that will work for you. I do believe having the hot water tank is integral to maintaining the integrity and value of what these boats offer. Good job & good luck with the install.

Here is the job finished ... Could not put the water heater where the old one was so i had to make a shelve and mount the heater on that and tied it down with the strap. WE now have hot water !!!!

I have no idea how one would replace the water heater unless there was an opening !!!!! the boat was built around the waste holding tank and hot water heater!!!!

BTW it is a Attwood 4 gal hot water heater.... #96411 Ordered form Panther Products..

Just to add more info to this thread:

Here's a shot of the Seward F-700 coming out of the L shaped hatch at the starboard helm floor. I had mounted the AP steering pump along side the heater, that's the 3 black lines you see to the left. The pump was unscrewed and swung out of the way. Without this hatch things would have gone a little different!

I realized I had a pressure drop in the fresh water system and promptly detected the slow leak at the base of the tank. Was glad to find the platform under the tank in solid condition. Also removed and replaced the two 5/8" coolant loop hoses. Tonight a new F-700 heater goes in.

Yes but a simple wipe down with spray9 was all, I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled it, here it was pre-cleaning:

All in all it was a quite painless and very productive two half days in which I did the water heater, coolant flush, replaced both 5/8" engine coolant lines, engine zincs, misc odds and ends, and (of course) a full bilge cleaning. And still found time to make it to the beach by 1:00 today. Fishing tmrw, an extended Labor Day weekend at Old Saybrook.. and that unofficially ends the summer of 2013
