Depends on the wave action in the anchorage

Rob,

Out of curiosity, how much did the petrol unit set you back and how quiet are they? I'm thinking about getting one for ours. I'm in two minds yet as I am not keen on petrol on boats. Is the genset worth getting over a 110 volt invertor, bearing in mind we are 240 volts this side of the atlantic?

The Honda 2K is about $1,100 (USD). IMO, it's not worth it to go out and buy it just for the boat use but if you already have one it could be worth bringing along. We did an 11 day trip, all on the hook or a mooring so it came in handy from time to time - frozen drinks, coffee pot, microwave, but that can all be done with an inverter. We used the boat regularly, atleast every 3 days, so my 4D deep cycle house battery was fine for the spans in between charges off the alternator. I am 100% LED lighting and we went all cooler, no fridge, so power demands were kept minimal. I would go with a strong house bank and an inverter rather than buying a portable genny. But of course that all depends on how long you sit in one spot and your power demands. I don't have an inverter so for the 110V side I needed it. I will likely install one this winter. As far as the gasoline, it's onboard for the dinghy anyway and that Honda really sips fuel so it's not like you need to keep a portable can around. In economy mode (idle speed) on the bow you really can't even hear it run.

Of course your boat will be a little bit of 120v America as any systems on board are 120 (fridge, microwave, water heater) as well as the wiring and shorepower inlet.

There is a European version of Rob's generator: http://www.honda.co.uk/energy/generators/EU10I/

So you could do double duty and keep it at home for emergencies (Do you have storm related blackouts? We sure do!) and bring it to the boat when needed.

Also, when we had our 28 I would store a gas can when needed in the transom fishbox. With its bottom mounted overboard drain I figured fumes/leaks would safely vent outside the boat. Just make sure it's well sealed.

Thanks for the tips guys, at most i think our trips away will be three days tops. I suppose we could install an invertor for when we are running so we can use the microwave etc, but will have to install a transformer for when we are berthed in the marina.

It's something I want to look into as changing the boat over to 240 volts isn't really a practical option.

I have an 1800 watt prosine inverter on my 28. I also have 2 4D batteries installed - one for house use and one for the engine. It will run the microwave just fine while hanging out. It is not strong enough to power my AC or water heater. I also use it to power the TV for football (american) games while out fishing.

The prosine on my boat (2003 flush deck) is installed in the locker under the quarter berth just behind the battery selector switch.

It will run the AC when not in economy (idle) mode so definitely not ideal but do-able. It "will" run in the rain but not recommended, for more than one reason...damage & safety.

Briefly going back to FredFryGuy's original post, the only location I have heard of a generator being mounted on a 28 is in the area between the stringers, under the helm (as shown in the picture above from Pitou). Does anyone out there know of one in a different location? It would need to be very compact.

The previous owner of our 2005 TE FD installed an after market genset in the port side cockpit locker. It is a Nextgen UCM1-3.5 (3.5 kwh) single cylinder diesel with a dry weight of 160 lbs. Doesn't appear to cause a list to port. It is a snug fit but I have been able to do all the routine maintenance without much difficulty. The surveyor even commented it was a "neat" installation.

The genset has its own water inlet, sea strainer and Racor. The bottom of the bin was removed leaving the top frame for drainage and to enable the latch to secure the hatch.

Hope the pictures show OK. First time trying to post some.

We have entec mounted behind the Yanmar on a Flush deck. Has stainless sound proof cabinet around it but it is still quite noisy but it burns diesel.

Engine Box set-up.

Center and back sections of the stainless sound enclosure are removed in this picture, but you can see the 2 sets of rubber latches either side on the base. Not a bad little unit. You can also see the additional sound insulation around the unit. It's under deck, against cabin bulkhead and under hatch as well. Top strainer is gen-set then AC pump and then AC strainer at bottom right with respective thru hulls. set-up with a lift muffler and above water exhaust.
