smoking yanmar 315hp

Post by Jelem 2000 »

My Albin28 Te 2000 has been in in storage in Canada for two years. It has 500hr on the engine. When I started the engine in the water this spring there was a lot of blue smoke and what looked like oil coming out out the exaust.
The boat was for sale and the buyer did not buy it because of that.
How serious of a problem is that.
What should I do about it. It was not smoking when I put it in strorage 2 years ago.

Thank you for your help.

Blue smoke indicates oil, but after two years in storage your turbo could be frozen/stuck. This would happen every year on my GM powered 28 and a few raps on the turbo would un-stick it. The usual indicator for that problem is black smoke as you power up but you don't say if you took it out from the dock.

Did a mechanic look at it? It shouldn't have gone bad just sitting there.

Good luck!

Did it have 2 year old diesel in the tank? It might be worth throwing in some cetane booster (I assume you have it over that side?) and get out and give it a run.

We did take it out for a short ride and the engine ran just fine.
The fuel has been in the tank for over three years now.
I will try the cetane booster.
Thank you for your help.

The mecanic say that it could be the turbo seal, the valve guide that have dried up or pistons rings that have seased!
We are rebuilding the turbo and will take it out for a good ride and I will try the cetane booster.

We have rebuilded the turbo and it is no longer leaking oil, added the cetane booster and took it for a good ride and the smoke disappeared.
Thanks you for your help.
It is now listed for sale in the trade forum. :D
