I had a hard time reading the trans fluid as the stick screws down and it has 2 lines on it. For the Yanmar engine with the ZF transmission I was told to check the trans oil when the engine has been warmed up and the engine is running?
Is this the right way to check the oil on this transmission?
Looks like I overfilled the transmission, should I drain out some of the extra? Can it cause trouble if I run the boat with too much trans oil? Thanks for any replys, Jim

Yes, drain some fluid, better off being closer to the LOW mark. You could foam the fluid if overfilled.

I have a ZF, model HSW 630-2.0 R. (2:1 ratio.)
I have always checked the fluid level cold and with the dipstick cap "resting" on top of the casing (i.e. not screwed down); it is one of my pre-start check list items.

For the record - I spoke to ZF's marine propulsion service group in Miramar FL. (1 954 441-4040) today. They confirmed the ATF level check process I described EXCEPT they recommend briefly running the engine to be sure that the fluid is circulated throughout the cooler/ tubing then shut it down and check it right away. The brief running accommodates the many engine cooler/ tubing arrangements.
In summary:
1. Run engine briefly
2. Shut it down
3. Unscrew the dip stick, clean it and rest the cap on the casing with out screwing it down, check the level.
