Oy! Seems that the first symptom was a sudden loss of power. RPMs went from 2500 to 1300. Long story short, a bad injector led to an overheating piston, which led to a cracked (then broken) valve, which sent a piece of the valve over to mr. Turbo. Repair ops underway, looking for part time job.

Prevention?
The funny thing is, there WERE no warnings. having recently cleaned and painted the bottom, we were getting very good speed/RPM about 17kts at 2450. whoomp. down to thirteen hundred instantly. No previous smoke, no tattletale rattling (like you could hear it anyway). Head is off and cylinders are smooth Turbo is being evaluated. I'll have to look at the old logs to determine the injector age. I have about 2340 hrs on the engine. Cleaning the aftercooler while we're at it. Other than being a bit brisk, I think it's better than happening in July Didn't need seatow etc since we still had steerage. Actually, we fished (invain) all the way back to the marina.

In troubleshooting a sudden loss of power, and AFTER polishing the fuel, and
replacing injectors, we discovered what we think may have been associated
with the problem. At left is the remaining part of the number six exhaust
valve.
