dual filters installed

Post by meridian »

My A-36 had a Racor 500 buried low in the bilge where it was impossible to see the bowl. I've relocated that one and another one I got used from another site and set them up so I can switch between the two. I also added a small 12v pump for priming. The new position is on the forward bulkhead so I can just lift the hatch to check the status. I still have some clean-up work to do on the installation.

Heads up on the Racor 500's. If it was built before 1997, a spacer is required in order to handle the replacement filters. The newer replacement filters may include this spacer. The older replacement filters don't include the spacer...

Check out: http://designatedengineer.com/

His page for Racor filters has a warning notice.

Your layout looks like there is space to accommodate restriction gauges. I use one with the drag pointer. Bowl may be fairly clear but the filter can be at or near capacity...

Have fun,

Now you boys are talking! I like your pictures and your installation. . I assume it is service and backup for a single engine. Why no marine 500's with shinny bowl? I have two Fords and old truck 500 racors . The primer pumps are in a rotten place to reach. Where did you get the primer in your rig? Why electric? not hand pump? Thanks to the other fellow who put up the filter suppliers information. I want to redo my filtration install which is on the bulkhead as you have redone yours with isolating valves restriction gauge and hand primer. Happy Trails Jay Sandler

I got the primer pump from an automotive store, about $40. Due to the location of the filters, it is a long run from the tanks then back to the engine.

Jay

In my opinion, the Racor 500G (FG?) can still be used on recreational vessels. If it is a USCG inspected vessel then a Racor 500MA unit, one with the silvery bowl, adheres to USCG standards...

I added a vacuum gauge to my fuel system, it shows how hard the fuel pump is working to draw fuel through the Racor filter. There's no guessing the status of the filters. Gives you plenty of notice. I can even see it from the bridge. I like the simplicity of a single filter.

All it takes is a T fitting in the fuel line immediately after the Racor and a rubber hose to the gauge, can be any length. The gauge should read zero, if it starts to climb, it's time to think about changing the filters. If it gets into the red, you should have done it when it was in the yellow.

Racor makes a "T" handle for the bowl that has this gauge in it, but that requires you to go look.
