28TE Deck Hatch Inserts

Post by carolmarie »

By chance, does anyone know the vendor who supplied the port and starboard deck hatch inserts ( on either side of the engine box) on the 28TE? Perhaps Albin fabricated them themselves. Appreciate any inputs. Thanks,
carolmarie, 2001, 28TE, 6LP-STE.

They had 2 types: originally fiberglass and then they switched to plastic. 2001 was around the time they switched a few things, including the deck boxes and the gunnel racks. The deck boxes went from fiberglass to plastic. The gunnel racks went from fiberglass with recessed toe-rails to plastic with external toe-rails.. My guess would be that the fiberglass components were factory made, the plastics were out-sourced. A call to Ken at Standish would probably be helpful, especially considering that he employs some ex-Albin employees.

I'm assuming that Albin made them in house. I'm also assuming you need to replace one?

When I went to sell Sonny III (A 1997 28TE) I was afraid my cracked, delaminating box covers would be a deal breaker. So I made new ones from good grade plywood, laminated to get the correct thickness, that I sealed with West System. I also over bored the holes for the hinge screws and the lift pull and filled them with epoxy before drilling the smaller final holes. Painted them with good grade paint and cursed the fact that I hadn't done them years earlier!

Doug, I think you were referring to the opening lid but the OP was referring to the drop in insert pictured here
